Beats Arber Xhekaj down the ice to negate a Caps' icing, slips the puck around Xhekaj behind the net, then puts a lovely backhand pass right on Eller's stick for the goal. Funniest thing about the replay is Eller looking skyward after apparently icing the puck, and eventually scoring on Frank's hustle play.

Okay, nice assist. Big deal. Not main board worthy. Whatever.

Not whatever. The guy turns 27 next month and is finally playing in his first NHL game. Played his minor hockey near Omaha, and in the NCAA for Western Michigan, so surely hasn't been in the spotlight. He's won the last two Calder Cups with the Hershey Bears, and has led the team in goal scoring both seasons. On a 2-year contract with the Caps, which will be one-way next season.

I love underdog stories like this.

Washington is doing a fantastic job of developing players in Hershey that fit well into the Caps system.
They don't seem to be rushing their development and are willing to send them back down if they aren't ready yet. It reminds me of what Detroit was known for a number of years ago.
Miroshnichenko and Lapierre are two recent examples. They both need more shifts and ice time to work on their weaknesses and gain confidence.
Protas and McMichael were slow cooked in the Bears organization, off and on, and are finally reaching their expected potential this season.
It will be interesting to see what they do with Leonard, Hutson, Mateiko, Sikora, Cristall, Paracsak, and Protas the 2nd. I suspect, other than Leonard and possibly Cristall, they will all spend a few seasons in Hershey.
It's still a very small sample size, but it looks like Ethen Frank may just stick around for a bit. Not only is he scoring but he seems to be doing all the little things that coaches love.

Caps have done a superb job in rebuilding on the fly. Barely skipped a beat.
