At the time of the trade Dach was 21 years old and was picked #3 overall just three years before. He played great in the playoffs as an 18 year old with 6 points in 9 games. Then he missed most of the season with a broken wrist as a 19 year old. He played one more year on the Hawks as a 20 year old with 26 points in 70 games. He had 59 points in 154 games between the ages of 18-20.
It is very difficult to acquire top six centre with size. You usually need to draft them as most teams don’t trade those types of players. Especially at the age of 20.
His first season on the Habs he had 38 points in 58 games which was a nice improvement. I remember him playing really good hockey the second half of the season. Then last year he only played two games and missed the rest of the season with a knee injury. He has shown some glimpses this year of being a solid top six player.
Romanov was projected to be a #3 defensive minded defenceman. He has some two way play to go to his game.
It was a trade at the time every Habs fan was happy with for the potential of how Dach could be. It’s been more injuries that have derailed Dach more than anything.
I’d do that trade again in a heartbeat as a Habs fan.
