he was very bad in last year's playoffs and he's still bad this year, I don't think teams still view him as a good defenseman, you won't get much maybe a 4th

Desharnais
Pateryn
Thrower

For

Holland
Polak
5th round pick

Pateryn could be a shutdown defender the Leafs seen to be looking for. The best part is he fits in with the age movement and is signed next year on a cheap contract at 800k.

Therrien likes his veterans and Polak could be a main stay at #6 RHD. Keep the defense as one rather than a revolving door. Based on tonight's game during the game, said Pateryn was worried all the time to make a mistake as he would be punished out of the lineup. Can be very hard on him. I see him getting the playing time in Toronto and allowed to see different situations.

Holland was on waivers and no takers. Desharnais can probably help a little more offensively than Holland. Hans fans would probably love seeing Desharnais out of the lineup, just so Therrien could stop over using him and putting him in bad spots to play. Holland would be able to cycle between 3rd and 4th line center role in Montreal. His size would be a bit more welcome too.

Thrower is a physical damn who was a former 2nd rounder. Stock has fallen off. Could be a project that could maybe turn it around for the Leafs.

Salaries are basically the same. I think it fills out the rosters better as like I said Pateryn fits the shutdown role and age group going forward for the Leafs and also locked up next year. Holland replaces an overused Desharnais and the vet Polak would probably stop a revolving door on defense for the bottom pairing as: Weber / Petry / Polak would be the right side.

I have this bad feeling the flames will sign Polak this offseason. Mgmt is head over heels for this type.

Not sure id give up pateryn for polka straight up.

Being a RHD means he'll have value as a 6/7D on a playoff team.

A 5th is fine, hopefully a 4th.

The Leafs could really use Gunnarson right about now:help: Hated the trade then, even more now.

I would rather have the two 2nds and Polak so we can trade Polak again for potentially a 3rd.

One of those 2nds was used to get Andersen and the other is in 2018.

Gunnarsson's points and ice time have been declining since with the Leafs. In his last 2 seasons with the Leafs over 60% of his zone starts were in his own zone and now on St. Louis over 50% of his zone starts were in the offensive zone and his points have gone down.

His advance stats showed that he was not a good defensemen because he was overused and miscast as a top pairing/top 4 defensemen with the Leafs. He went from playing 20 minutes a night with the Leafs to 18 minutes, 17 and now 14 minutes in his last three seasons with the Blues. Only this season Gunnarsson has been graded well when it comes to advance stats and that is because he is playing less minutes and less against top line players like he was in Toronto.

He is being properly used as a 6th defensemen on the Blues (Bouwmeester, Pietrangelo, Shattenkirk, Parayko and Edmunsdon have more ATOI than he does). Leafs have too many of that and him being the Leafs doesnt improve this team now, Leafs need top 4 defensemen - Gunnarsson isnt that.

This thread is funny. His value is a cap dump from the team acquiring him. And even that's pushing it.

what? well obviously we wouldn't trade him. I don't like him on my team but time and time again GM's pay for these kind of players it maybe a 5th even a 7th but there is no way we will take a cap dump unless it is with a pick and shorter team than polka (so UFA this yr)

You can't, it was extremely clear to everyone who weren't the Leafs, apparently, that he was not longer an NHL defenseman last year in the finals, the WHC didn't do anything help his stock.

He's probably the worst defenseman in the NHL right now, so again, getting a Cap Dump is the Best Case scenario in a trade for the Leafs. It was a horrendous signing at the team, and it's still just as bad.

Whether or not you think he's actually good, I'm sure GMs still at least have the perception that he's a helpful d-man. I think he can get, at the very least, a mid pick back.

I know last year he was admittedly traded for way more than his worth. My question is, what would he be worth now?

Polak isn't worth much at all. Anyone thinking he brings back a useful player or a high pick hasn't watched him play. 4th round pick at best.

GM's still seem to go insane over "grit" and "depth" at the trade deadline.

Realistically he sucks and isn't worth more than a 6th. I fully expect a 2nd or 3rd from a playoff team though.
