Roman Hamrlik - did he live up to his potential?

1999 at least has Zetterberg, Havlat, the Sedins, Connolly, Ryan Malone. I dislike 1992 more, personally.
Well, 1992 did have Peca and Lehtinen, two of the best two-way forwards of the last decade and a half. And Yashin, in his hey-day was seen as a top-5 forward in the league whom has achieved more than Zetterberg so far. Gonchar, Norstrom, Hamrlik, Aucoin, Smith (Jason), Svehla, Kaspiritus, Mironov, Ragnarsson, Rivet, Rathje and Svehla have all been first-pairing defensemen for most of their careers. Yelle, McCarthy, Maltby, Barnaby and Laperriere are all great grinders down low. Straka and Stillman are also decent first-liners. Jim Carey also happened to win the Vezina early on in his career. And on top of that, throw in a few guys like V. Bure, Carter (Anson), Brylin, Fernandez and Zholtok, I think it is a fairly decent draft.

I'd take the 1992 draft over the 1999 draft any day.

Well, he's a disappointment the same way Rick Green was a disappointment I guess.

Well, there's also Ryan Miller, Martin Erat, Saprykin, Radivojevic, Kelly, Comrie, Havelid, Frank Kaberle, Nicklas Hagman, Jordan Leopold, Auld, Boynton, Calder winning Barrett Jackman, Mezei, Doug Murray, Martinek, Khavanov, George Parros, Exelby, Vrbata, Koustopolous, Brian McGrattan, plus I think Zetterberg is better now than Yashin was at his peak. I really didn't like 1992 for some reason. To me, it was just full of uninteresting players.

If he was drafted #2, we would not be debating his worth. But the stigma of being drafted 1st overall places unfair expectations on him. He was the best player from the 92 draft (with a nod to Gonchar), and he was drafted at the correct position. Hold the draft again, and I bet he gets selected #1 again.

Yashin had a superior prime, I'd draft him number one over Hamrlik.

Here's the top 10 ranking by THN that year:

1.Todd Warriner
2.Mike Rathje
3.Roman Hamrlik
4.Ryan Sittler
5.Alexei Yashin
6.David Cooper
7.Brandon Convery
8.Robert Petrovicky
9.Curtis Bowen
10.Cory Stillman

if i recall right, on draft day, the projected #1 pick was yashin, then hamrilk going 2nd.

dont remember why tb picked hamrlik.
