After skimming through the Blues forum, it seems that they have a need for a 3rd line center rather than at wing (since they have an overload of wingers). Therefore, perhaps Jeffrey would have to be included in a package deal rather than Kennedy?

Despres (or Niskanen) + Jeffery + (a conditional pick or mid prospect)?

I'm not sure Jeffrey is the caliber third line center they have in mind.

I'd be fine with Niskanen+Kennedy+Harrington for Stewart. If he continues his pace to start the season, that's what it'll take.

From a Blues perspective, they can slide D'Agostini into Stewart's spot, have TK on their 4th line, get a guy to pair with their #1 and a high end D prospect to give their organization some depth at that position.

Makes sense to me. Again, unless they can get their top 4 guy via picks and futures, I'm not seeing a whole lot of other options for them.

I think they might prefer Despres to Niskanen for longer term purposes.

As I keep saying, four of their top six (Petro, Shattenkirk, Cole, Russell) are RFA's. They've got a budget. Despres makes more sense.

Plus, odd as it sounds, who in their top six does Niskanen automatically supplant?

TK, Despres, Harrington for Stewart would make more sense for them, but I don't know if they do it now unless Stewart falters some.

don't know the feasibility of St. Louis trade. on paper it seems to make sense. but their fans cry bloody murder when Stewart is brought up. I wouldn't mind trying to get them to add Matt D'Agostini in a potential Stewart deal.

Niskanen is far more prepared to take on top pairing duty than Despres. The Blues are trying to go deep in the postseason this year. If a deal was made in the next month, I'd be surprised if it involves Despres. In the summer? After Despres has a full season under his belt, sure.

Niskanen is a good fit for what they need this season IMO. TK is a good depth guy to have. And adding a D prospect not named Despres/Morrow/Pouliot would get their attention.

O'k, look at the Blues top six. Who gets benched for Niskanen?

Petro? No ******* chance.
Shattenkirk? No ******* chance.
Jackman, Polak? No ******* chance.
Cole, Russell? Maybe, but I wouldn't assume so.

Niskanen gives them another option. He doesn't make them better this season to an extent that justifies a move from Chris Stewart to Tyler Kennedy.

Niskanen is an upgrade over all of them but Petro, Shattenkirk and Jackman. He slots right in with Petro. Which leaves them sick depth at the 5/6/7 spots.

Despres is not an upgrade for them this year. Niskanen is.

I got the feeling Letang wasn't a fan of being paired with Despres. He can't play his game when Despres is iffy in his own end. If that can change, Niskanen can bring us a linemate for Sid. If he stays solid this season, another Neal IMO.

There is no evidence to back that up. Bylsma likely just wanted to see it in camp a bit but was never serious about playing Despres on the top pairing so soon. I think people read WAY too far into one Bylsma quote.

I'm too lazy to find the quote, but when Letang was asked about him being paired with Despres, he seemed to come off as less than enthusiastic. Like he'd do whatever the coach told him to. When asked about being paired with Niskanen, he immediately said he's comfortable and wants him there longterm.

Yah but remember, fan noise means 0 to GMs. They don't read it / know we exist, most likely.

If the deal makes both teams better within the cap structure, it's a possibility worth discussing. Personally I don't think STL needs much of anything from anyone. Even as-is their D is very solid and their G are great. An extremely deep team from top to bottom with a lot of responsible two-way players.

I actually don't like the idea (now) of doing anything to make that team better. Sort of feels like it would've felt to make a trade to the Red Wings or Blackhawks a few years ago, without taking one of their key players. Stewart looks in better shape so far but he's still got a lot to prove. In short I don't think they'd miss him much and adding another good D to their roster might create a team we'd have a hard time competing against in the Finals. I think there's a pretty good chance STL gets there this year.

Cole, Cole, Cole . . . we've discussed this before. I'll handle personnel, you've got the bench, and we're golden. :D

Really can't see San Jose. They're deep enough on defense to be o'k right now without Burns and Demers. IMO, they're a team that deals a guy like Murray when those two come back.

Winnipeg needs defense. Anything make sense?

St Louis doesn't need defense, but Redden is their #7 and their prospect pool on defense is limited. Thoughts?

Ottawa? Nashville? Montreal?

Minnesota would seem to be a pretty good fit of team needs.

LA needs affordable defensive help. Detroit too.

Maybe Dallas? Columbus?

Calgary seems to make a lot of sense. Piece of big package for Iginla and Glencross . . . Sid and Geno with two good wingers each, NHL issues retroactive clause to CBA banning that.

Definite match of needs . . . TK & Despres for Stewart :)

Detroit really needs defense. Maybe something around Franzen?

I may sound like a broken record here but the 1 team that would be ideal partners wit hthe pens would be Minnesota.

Seto still hasn't done much for them offensively and Bouchard has apparently looked very sharp for them. They also have plenty of young wingers in their system (Zucker, Coyle, Phillips...) that are very close to stepping in. They're at the 50 contract limit (as per a recent tweet by Russo). If there's 1 team that knows our team extremely well its Minnesota (Fletcher & Yeo). I can definitely see them making a swap before St. Louis (since they recently signed Redden).

Another cool thing is that Martin & Niskanen are from Minnesota and therefore could be a little enticing for the fans too... but its very hard to judge which one of our Ds they'd like in a deal. Part of me says Despres since he's cheap and they need to cut costs for next years cap and another part of me says that they'd want to save $$$ and take somebody who's cost efficient like Niskanen. We can rule Martin out in my opinion given their current cap situation.

Personally, I'd prefer to see one of the followng:

Despres for Coyle or Zucker ------- Young for Young
Niskanen for Setoguchi ------- Nisky would be perfect next to Suter and cap wise, they save a little too. Same age too.

Agreed, finding a way to snag Coyle would be awesome

I agree.

Seto does seem like an ideal target. We have plenty of defense to offer but the right fit for the Wild is tough to identify. Despres has the upside they'd like but Niskanen is a much more steady NHL contributor than Despres at the moment.
