It could have to do with the fact they were drafted by their respected teams, like McAvoy, and therefore likely on the reserve list at the deadline.

McAvoy was on the Bruins reserve list and thus was playoff eligible. Hutson is a free agent signing, he needed to be signed by the trade deadline to be playoff eligible.
