to Detroit Red Wings
Ristolainen (2.5 years term)
Fedotov (1.5 years term)
depth forward [ Cates? Poehling? Deslauriers? Lycksell? ]
( PHI is adding, you tell me how much )

to Philadelphia Flyers

Copp (2.5 years term)
Chiarot or Holl (1.5 years term)
Lyon or Husso (expiring rental goalie)
( DET could retain 50% on Husso or Lyon to balance cap )

I feel like this would be a fair deal if Copp was as overpaid as Ristolainen is, but Copp is looking relatively okay for his cap hit. Still overpaid, but useful. Therefore I think Philly is going to need to add here. This is both teams sending a 2.5 year and 1.5 year overpaid negative value contract, which seems fair.

This improves Philly's roster a little bit, whereas for Detroit, it might make them a little worse in the short term. The add-on (picks prospects) from Philly is the motivation for Detroit to do this.

What does Philly add here to make this a fair deal ?

DETROIT'S NEW PLAYERS

Ristolainen fits on the Detroit blueline as a right shot a little bit better than Chiarot (left handed) and Holl (was bad enough to be waived earlier in the season). There's no second goalie set in stone for next year to play with Talbot. Fedotov would backup Talbot next year, unless Cossa plays so good that he forces his way onto the team, and in that case, Fedotov can be waived and play in Grand Rapids. The depth forward coming in has less cap and term than Copp and probably younger too.

The roster doesn't improve but the prospect pool does. They're going to miss the playoffs anyways and Copp wasn't gonna still be here when Detroit becomes a contender.

PHILLY'S NEW PLAYERS

Copp is a decent versatile bottom 6 vet forward who probably fits on a John Tortorella team. Lyon or Husso are hopefully better than Fedotov, and if not, they're gone in the summer. Kolosov can replace them long-term. Chiarot or Holl are overpaid depth D, but so was Ristolainen. Briere is probably trying to slowly move out guys that he inherited that don't fit into long-term plans. Ristolainen is probably one of those guys. This brings in a new guy with less term.

Overall the team is probably a bit better now, as they're in the playoff hunt.

Has fedotov's value tanked or something? If not I'd imagine Philly says no even before being asked to add.

Copp is a 5 mil contract and is not producing any better than what Philly has at center right now.

Holl is a cap dump right now, chariot at almost 5 mil pretty much is as well.

Husso has one win on the season, stats pretty similar to fed and is a ufa. He's pretty much worthless to Philly, especially at almost 4 mil.

Lyon isn't much better.

Risto, while he has his warts, is better than either defender the wings are offering and seems to be well liked by torts.

Worse case original poster wants to send a collection to cap dumps that are upwards of 14 mil in cap space, offering at best an over paid center who isn't a clear upgrade on what they got, give up the better defender in the deal, and swap out a younger goalie whose played all of 10 games for an older one who isn't a clear upgrade on what they got.

All that under the idea that Philly, who is one win ahead of Detroit, is in playoff contention while Detroit has no shot.

Do you start bad trade threads for Detroit, or other teams too?

You know it's a doozy of a proposal when the best player in the whole deal is...Andrew Copp.

I'm not even sure how to sort parsing this tbh. My inclination is that both teams would prefer to just stick with their own rubbish probably.

Talk about a real lose-lose. Not a single good player on either team listed lol
I feel like Copp can help Philly in the short to mid term better than Ristolainen can. I also feel that Briere would want to move on from pre-Briere players that aren't in the long-term plans, and that Detroit's right-handed D are trash after Seider. Philly could use a bit of goalie flexibility, whereas Detroit doesn't need any (until Cossa waiver exemption ends Oct 2026). It would be ideal for Chiarot or Holl or both to be jettisoned by DET, and Copp maybe fits Philly's bottom 6 better than some other depth forward.

Nobody is getting "better", but they're swapping in players who fit their team needs better, in terms of either on the ice or contracts or both. Also DET sucks right now and are recieving a pick or prospect or multiple. Which is preferable to being bad and not adding picks and prospects.

Risto plans for flyers should be straight forward. Retain enough money/take on a bad contract and trade for players under 24 or draft picks. The goal of the flyers should not be to take back players 30+. The team isn't winning the next 2 years with thier goaltending and center situation. Sure Lyon or Husso makes the team better this year. But that gets you to pick 10-15 in the draft or out in round 1 in a 1-8 matchup. YIPPEE!!!!! The goal should be to acquire enough picks/players to get a young center. And hope the center you acquire does not become pld part 2. (Edit) Cates playing well last 2.5 weeks and looks legit young 3c. He isn't going any where for players over 30.

Don’t see how Philly adds here.

I think most teams would take the overpaid right handed D over the overpaid depth forward.

Fedotov’s contract is pricey but he’s a highly touted KHLer. Bad stats in a handful of games with a bad team aren’t going to be enough to diminish his value. Lots of rebuilding teams with cap space would line up to take a chance on him.
