there's been unconfirmed tweets floating around the last couple hours suggesting that rickey henderson has passed. obviously can't assume anything until its confirmed, but casey pratt is pretty much as reliable a source as it gets regarding the A's and if he's reporting it, then its probably true

2024 decided it just hadn't been cruel enough to A's fans

What an era of baseball that was back then. Really feel spoiled to have been able to see so many great pitchers and hitters while I was growing up, with Rickey being among them.

one of baseball's all time great players and characters. you can't think of the A's without thinking of rickey henderson. he truly was oakland baseball in every way possible

and just four days shy of his 66th birthday. rickey can rest easy knowing that no one's ever touching his SB and runs records

RIP rickey. RIP oakland baseball

Deserves to be in the conversation for best player, and such a dynamic figure. I remember hearing the story of him following the catcher to the mound for a mound visit because it wasn’t against the rules and the other team wanting to kill him. That’s a true king move.

Always loved watching him play when I was a kid. Mainly remember him as a Athletic but us Blue Jays fans love him for his brief stint that ended with a World Series championship.

RIP Rickey

Anyone know the cause? He was on the A's broadcast the final week of the coliseum and looked great, didn't sound like anything was wrong either. So just weird to see a couple of months later he's passed.

His numbers are ridiculous. I keep forgetting just how good he was.
Posted elsewhere on this site but his stolen base record is basically Gretzky record level untouchable;

Even with the changes to the game to make it friendlier to stealing, Rickey being good + being good at it for so long puts that number basically out of reach for any puny mortal who dare entertain the thought. The f***ing guy nearly stole 40 bags at age 39!

To put it into perspective, Ronald Acuna has been probably the most recognizable for his exploits on the base paths in the last couple years, with him stealing 73 last year and having 196 in his career already.

Let's just say, for instance sake, Acuna reveals himself to be the best base stealer of his generation and makes stealing 73 a year look routine. With essentially 200 already in the bank, it would take him approximately 17 seasons to pass Rickey's mark of 1406 at that type of clip with absolutely zero room for letting up and would have to play 24 seasons in total to get there. No chance when the concept of athletic decline exists.

Legit to me one of the inner circle greatest of all time type players.

Rickey is a legend, I’d say the best ever Oakland Athletic, and a great ambassador for Oakland and the game of baseball.

He’s why 24 is my favorite number. I’ll miss seeing him around the Coliseum, and several communities will miss the impact his presence brought.

The most selfless guy to speak in the third person. Thank you, Rickey.

Add the all-time runs...plus 3000 hits....almost 300 HR's....all from the leadoff spot.
