Tribute RIP Ray Shero

Ray Shero in Heaven.

Damn, gone at 62. That's way too young. Was this unexpected though or was he dealing with an illness?

I can only imagine Ray is up in heaven scouting a prospect camp where it's nothing but puck moving defensemen that can only muster a mediocre NHL career. Draft on Ray...draft on!

He seemed like a solid person. His tenure as GM looks a lot better now than it did back then because we were able to get internal replacements than through free agency. He probably is still trying to overload on D prospects.

Woah woah woah what the hell? He was sick? That sucks man. He wasn’t even old. RIP to GMRS.

He was the first Penguin I ever actually met in person, I have a jersey signed by him haha. Nice guy.

Was he sick? Cancer? They didn’t say…also could be sudden heart attack? Either way, he way too young

I’ll never forgot my brother who’s not super into hockey saw me ask for his autograph and whipped out an orange hockey ball from I don’t even remember where and got him to sign his damn ball. Ray got a kick out of that

Yeah I don't think Sullivan ever worked directly with Shero, but Rust and Crosby obviously make a ton of sense as leaders of the team with the connection to Shero.
Malkin and Letang have more connections than Rust. Rust was drafted by Shero, but he didn't join WBS until spring of 2014. Shero and Bylsma were fired that summer.

Sullivan would've had a connection with Shero through USA Hockey.

It's certainly possible this was the reason for the meeting, though.

Jesus. That’s a kick in the stomach. I always like him even when I didn’t agree with his moves.

You’ll always be a SC Champion Ray.

Like all people professionally, he had his strengths/weaknesses.

Seemed to be a stand up guy off the ice and sad to see someone so young pass.

My only personal interaction with Ray Shero was sitting to him and his family at Pamela's in Mt Lebo in the spring of 2014.

A week later he was fired. He was loyal to his coach, and it cost him his job.

RIP Ray Shero, thanks for building the 08 Finalist and the 09 Cup winner, and the work you did to build the 2016-17 Cup winners.

He built some great teams here but loyal to a fault to Bylsma probably prevented another Cup or two under his tenure. Particularly in 2013.

But 2 Finals appearances and 1 Cup is nothing to scoff at. He also got the ship turned around pretty quickly when he first took over with some simple stuff like filling out the bottom 6 with good, cheap depth players, like Ruutu, Laraque, Gill, Conklin and just leaving guys like Crosby and Malkin alone to do their thing.

If we don't get those 2 Finals appearances and that 1 Cup early maybe things become a mess pretty quickly and we become more like what the Oilers are today, dysfunctional and frustrated. That took a lot of pressure off everyone.

Also he seemed like a really nice guy and pretty smart when it came to hockey, very articulate in interviews. Thoughtful answers, not just typical newspeak.
