Maurice "Mad Dog" Vachon died today aged 84. From my home town of Ville Emard, Vachon was a pro wrestling star when I was a kid.

Honestly thought he was already dead.

I remember Diesel ripping off his prosthetic leg and hitting Shawn Michaels with it. That was fun.

He used to terrorize my father and his brothers for ***** and giggles when they were living in front of the Vachon family house on D'Aragon street.

I have nothing but good memories about this man.

«Vendredi soir à l'auditorium de Verdun m'a t'arracher la tête !!!»

RIP Mad Dog, one of my favorite wrestlers of all time.

He was a really close family friend and his health had taken a turn for the worst in recent years. RIP Mad Dog. He was one of the nicest people on the planet.

A piece of Quebec lore, gone.

Mad Dog, from the days where every small city had a contemporaneous "world champ" in their midst. Everyone was a world champ at the event the crowd was at -- the script dictated that it had to be that way.

Mad Dog's signature on-camera taunts and braggadoccio were legendary.

Gino Brito, Eddy Creatchman, Abdullah the Butcher, Sky Lo Lo, Les Rougeau, Edouard Carpentier with his infamous "savate". "La prise de l'ours" and "la corde à linge."

The classic closing salutation: "si Dieu le veux!" Most of them wearing speedos, with an overhanging belly and quite burly -- not much in the way of polish, chiseling or steroids. Couldn't be more raw but the crowd loved it.

I never quite understood why these outrageously over-sized "championship" belts were awarded, it was hilarious in a surreal kind of way. Even the title of the TV show featuring their events was corny: "Sur le matelas".

RIP, Mad Dog.

How could you not mention the Giant Jean Ferre, who later became andre the Giant? He was Carpentier's tag team partner for a lot of years, and rarely lost. And Mad Dog's older brother Paul. Gilles 'the Fish' Poisson, the Leduc brothers (lumberjacks), Don Leo Jonathon, Dino Bravo..the wrestling scene in Mtl was very popular in those days - I lived in Ontario, but we saw the wrestling out of Montreal the majority of the time.

Mad Dog was pretty handy with the blood capsules and ketchup - was usually "bloody" at the end of the match..and then the no-teeth grimace..looked menacing.

As a kid i would watch him everytime he was on TV. He's a part of my personal history. RIP maudit Mad Dog and thank you for all the good times you gave us...

You just did and I thank you. Funny, just saw Rodger Brulotte recount a wrestling event that took place at Jarry Park around 1973 (featuring the likes of Mad Dog vs. Killer Kowalski, another name I had forgotten), where a lot of the previously-stated guys were involved. It apparently had deteriorated so much that fights ensued in the stands.

Pretty amazing how the promoters built up so many of these personas, that they're not easily forgettable. "La prise du sommeil" was a classic wrestling move a lot of them used and it just never worked when we tried to emulate it. :sarcasm:

Next week, we'll revisit Roller Derby and Skinny Minny Miller. :amazed:

Brain plays tricks on you as you get older but pretty sure my father used to take me to see him in the 70's in the old Maple Leaf Wrestling (later nicknamed Make-Believe-Wrestling when us kids realized it was fake). Old George Cannon, Bruno Sammartino etc...

RIP Mad Dog

HUGE loss to the wrestling community, especially locally. I've spoken with quite a few indy wrestlers, bookers and promoters and all of them got hit hard by this announcement. Just a terrible loss, although none too surprising given his health had been deteriorating for quite some time now.

I had the chance to meet him when he came to NCW. He was in a wheel-chair, didn't look all too good but damn... he had one hell of a handshake. I spoke with my trainer yesterday and he said the same thing, his handshake puts you to shame. You go in for a moderate squeeze and he takes your hand and nearly crushes it, as he looks you in the eyes. He was intimidating, even into his 80s.

You'll be missed, Mad Dog.

Loved him. Need vids please.

An odd video from 1966, here Mad Dog's billed as "from Algeria" and seems to be performing for a Ladies' Social Club of some sort. He "bites" the guy:

I can't believe that place is still open too.

But I personally prefer Green Stop. Best poutine in town.

Should try their new poutine at Dillalo. It totally rocks! I think the place got sold to new owners, change their fries at first and didnt like them, but they change them back to better fries than before now.
