Johnny “Pie” McKenzie, the diminutive pest and right winger who was a true team leader and fan favorite on the Big, Bad Bruins of the 1970s, died last night after a long illness. He was 80.

He had been confined to a bed in his Wakefield home for some time.

As a kid, I loved him on the Vancouver Blazers. I was very impressed that he also rode in rodeos. He played the Soviets, too and scored on Tretiak! An awesome Albertan.

Interesting fact: he ended his career in Hartford and when he retired the Whalers retired his #19 and raised it to the rafters of the Civic Center in tribute to what he meant to hockey in New England. RIP
