I have an issue with the idea of billionaires.

Of course you can't take it with you when you're gone. The best you'll be able to do is leave a memorial or monument or your name scripted over a hospital entrance. In time you'll more than less be forgotten anyway unless they put your face on paper money but people don't use paper money like they use to.....so even that you'd be forgotten too. Who's he? No doubt he'll pass his billions on to members of his family. 'Charles? Yes, great guy.....let's move on to this new merger.' So he'll be remembered that way until they move on too.

In the meantime we'll continue on with the super rich vs. very very poor game. The very few winners and the the multitudes of losers. The buffer zone of the getting bys to the doing pretty damn wells in between though potentially at any given time shrinking. Our politicians almost always come from the at least doing very well class so nothing's likely to change on that score because it won't be in their interest.....everything just wonderful......unless the economy crashes or the earth's core becomes a fireball or Greenland melts and some coastal cities have to move inland (or even both happen) keeping in mind most of our nuclear reactors are planted near coastlines and water and radioactive material don't mix all that well. They won't have any answers for that but for now things are good.

Don't mind me. I'm just ranting.

I have an issue with the idea of people wanting to confiscate others money and redistribute it.

Theres two reasons to get rich

1) provide massive value to society which every self made billionaire has done

2) to set your next generations up for life. Theyve earned that privilege due to your sacrifice

Its an interesting era. I have known some fairly wealthy people. I never thought to myself I really deserve some of the money that they earned.

I have an issue with both responses.

1) We should have billionaires, and yes they contribute massive value to society and their investments make a lot of the economy function.

2) They should pay more in taxes than they currently do.

All hail the enlightened centrist Fitzy

Until you realize the top 1% pays roughly 40% of all taxes in the country while the bottom 50% pays just 2% of the total taxes in the country. And this doesnt even account for the taxes paid by who the 1% created jobs for through their companies.

As someone very involved in the tax world, the biggest outward conspiracy theory is that the rich dont pay their “fair share”. They pay an unfairly disproportionate amount of taxes in the country.

The tax code is written to incentive their activities to create more jobs, make more investments and in return they get tax deductions/credits that ultimately benefit the public. One such example would be 100% bonus depreciation as a real estate developer. If the developer builds a new apartment building that cost $40,000,000 and the developer therefore gets a $40,000,000 tax deduction then it ultimately cost the public $14,800,000 to build that (37% of $40,000,000). If the gov built it themselves they are far less efficient and government funded construction projects cost upwards of 2X the cost that private gets it done for. So the question is, would the public prefer a price tag of $14,800,000 for the project or $80,000,000? The answer is obvious

I'm not basing it on 'fair share.' I'm familiar with the data on taxes and where they come from.

Markets are a tremendous creator of wealth, but not a particularly meroticratic distributor of said wealth.

You raise it too high you disrupt growth and productivity by discouraging investment and deincentivizing risk taking and innovation. You keep it too low and the country falls into terrible debt, social services lag behind other democracies, and social unrest becomes stronger due to percieved inequalities.

This is why the "Third Way" has been by far the most successful compromise position.

Strange discussion to have in a memorial thread for a guys death. It’s even taboo to discuss the crimes of rapists and murderers when they pass. The owner of our team just lost his father.
it's really not that strange. tertiary, maybe, but an extension of the discussion of the man's legacy. I don't see it as disrespectful.

In all seriousness, RIP Mr. Dolan. I have nothing against the guy and it appears he lived a long and fulfilling life.

Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion, man.

The owner of our team just lost his father.

The much beloved owner of the Rangers. Everybody loves James Dolan

Wherever the keg is!
Everyday I miss my dad. I have never gotten over his passing 3 years ago. I hope Dolan is able to handle his dads passing better than I have.

I felt that way when my mother died. It was misdiagnosis after misdiagnosis with her. It caught everyone off-guard when she died. I was out of a job then, so I unfortunately had a lot of free time to mope...and a lot of time to drink.

The breadwinner during that time was my sister and I remember how she said if I didn't change right now, she was going to leave me with my pops. I thought she was being mellodramtic until she showed me the empty bottles I consumed myself. At first, I thought she added the bottles that my pops drank or the ones we both shared, but my pops was a vodka man, and I was a bourbon/whiskey/rum guy.

That scared the shit out of me: not only how quickly you can drown in a bottle but how unaware you can be of a vice that's killing you and killing you quickly.

Booze destroys many lives, families, marriages etc. Your sister was trying to save your life. Props to you for admitting your problem.

Someone just lost a family member, etc. Be respectful and a decent person. No need to trash someone or get into politics.

The internet especially in recent years has gotten way out of hand with virtue signaling and moral compass preaching. Instagram and Twitter are the worst. Narcissism to the 11th degree.

The guy changes our lives because everyone watched an HBO original series and Cablevision is still important to this day.

Show some respect for once. Is it really that hard?
