Not only was it not right but its dumb as hell. You wanna call a hockey stick a weapon, sure but dont you think most people in that arena could kick that little habs fan into the nosebleeds if he was dumb enough to swing a warm up used NHL stick from your favorite player?

Kid was already crying about his lip being hit by a puck, hes too soft to do any damage with a stick and thats hereditary, passed down from habs fan to habs fan for generations so even if his father grabbed the stick, who hasnt been slashed by a habs fan before, you know? Habs fans lack so much power the stick probably turned into a wet noodle the moment they came into contact with it.

But in all seriousness they definitely should have found a way to accommodate a hockey stick at a f***in hockey game, come on now.

I did see one story that said the arena staff offered to take the stick for safekeeping but they wouldn't give it up.
At that point they were asked to leave.
Still hearsay though ....
I didn't catch that.

In that case, I would change my opinion.

In either case, they should offer him a good set of comps to a playoff game of his choice. Whether they're right or wrong, this is the time for Shanahan to step in and take the high road on this

This was beautiful, thank you. You truly have a way with words good Sir.

I can't imagine anything other then staff offering to hold the stick at customer service and they pick it up after the game. Happens all the time, they don't let you keep sticks in the stands. Family must have deiced they didn't like that option and decided to leave instead. So be it.
If that's how it rolled out, I'm good with that too.

Exactly what should have happened.

Always nice to be appreciated by young, new users like yourself :sarcasm:
Tha fact that an OG like yourself would even take the time out of your day to speak to me, it just...more than words.

I don't get why SBC would be at fault. They offered to hold the stick until the end of the game and the family said no.

Why would we be mad at a bunch of people making near minimum wage who are trying to be accommodating and also follow the rules?

I imagine the whole idea of not being able to hold on to the stick is liability related. We may laugh at it being called a weapon but an angry adult swinging it in a tightly packed arena is not a great scenario, same reason fans don't get to hold on to bats that go into the crowd.

2 sides to every story. SBA arena staff has always been super acccomedating. I wonder if they gave the family other options that aren't listed here
The staff at any NHL rink is accommodating, they don't just represent the home team as in-game hosts, but also they represent the league itself.

I don't doubt that they were told they couldn't have the stick in the stands while the game was ongoing, I'm pretty sure that's a rule in rinks anywhere there's serious organized hockey being played at any level. We've all seen fist fights in the stands and out in the hallways wherever there are fans of opposing teams and alcohol involved and sometimes they don't even need the alcohol, fights are always right there ready to start, now put a stick in their hands or at the very least have a stick very available, as it wouldn't take much to take it out of the kid's hands and that's why anything that can be construed as a weapon is not allowed in the arena.

We've not heard from the Maple Leafs organization and of course everywhere this story has been published they've made sure to add the most over the top Twita-rage responses, just to add to the clicks.

If this happened exactly the way the story has been framed than that kid and his father are going to be going to a lot of free games and have a lifetime of free sweaters, sticks and pucks as teams try to out do each other to prove how caring they are compared to "you know that other organization, sniff!" The other thing that will be happening is those two attendants are going to be out of a job, and probably their bosses too, as should happen.

Until we hear from MLS&E, I think Ill reserve judgement.

They were right to treat as a weapon. Someone, not the kid could have gotten a hold of the stick. That being said, they handled it wrong. Surely they could have just put the stick somewhere until end of game and they can take it out?? Everyone wins. To ask them to leave lol. That's wrong!

It’s kinda scary that of the 27 votes 10 have reached a conclusion, after only hearing one side of the story.

If one fan can do it, we all can. And as others have pointed out, probably not a good idea to allow 18 thousand fans to wield sticks in a playoff environment, especially somewhere like Long Island or Boston. Those places are rowdy enough without weapons. Im sure they offered to hold onto the stick for them until after the game, much like the other kids that get a stick in pre game warmup from the players... looks like the dad got a bit greedy and is hoping for extra. Typical Habs fans.

This seems likely.

No need to get all bent outta shape if we don't have the whole story.

Players often give sticks to young fans after warm up. I'm pretty sure all nhl arenas and staff are capable of holding them for fans.

The staff likely have rules that are black and white. They can't just make a special exception because there's a good chance by doing so, they'll lose your job. If true, they offered to hold the stick until the end of the game; the family didn't like that option and hence, got the boot. I see no injustice here whatsoever.
