What a bunch of assholes.

They should have offered to store the stick for him until the end of the game, and asked him to please pick it up on his way out of the arena.

Sheesh.

5-6 years ago, I went to a game with a buddy who had a Canada flag tied to half a hockey stick - they were so nice about explaining why we couldn't bring it in, and then told us where they would take and how we could get it after the game.

There's more to this.

EDIT - Just saw the John Liu tweet. Unsurprising.

His parents.

Why is it, that almost every time in these sorts of stories, there's parents who act with less maturity than a child?
Back when journalists used to do journalism, they would attempt to verify a story. The parents could've claimed all sorts of wild tales, but the media didn't seek MLSE's version of events, because the parent's story fit a narrative and they ran with it. They could very well have said their story in jest.

Do you have any examples of media spreading the story without verifying?

Per MLSE, they left on their own accord after refusing to abide by their rules.

So fan was comfortable Habs are losing the game, so left instead...no wonder Habs lost the game because Suzuki was playing without a stick for the remainder half of the 3rd period...:sarcasm:

It's ludicrous how much attention this non story got. Especially since it didn't take long for the proper info to come out about it.

The family could have stayed at the game at kept the stick if they had wanted (not that I'd blame a small child for refusing to let go of a stick after something like that)

This whole situation reeks of the plague of ‘rules are for other people’ when it comes to some parents and their kids.

The irony here being in 30 years, ‘why do these kids expect everything handed to them!?’

Per the Leafs:

Maple Leafs tell their side of why young Canadiens fan left game

In a statement issued to TSN’s John Lu, a Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment official cleared up the situation, saying that the fan was asked if he would like to check the stick and that the pair left the game by their own volition.

“In this case, with 10 minutes remaining in the game, a fan was notified by security as he was walking in the concourse with a hockey stick, that due to fan safety protocols, MLSE’s fan services would assist them to check the stick until the end of the game as it poses a safety hazard for other fans,” the statement read. “The fan in this case did not want to check the stick, and instead made their own decision to leave the game.”

Typical Habby attention seeking drama, using the kid for cheap theatrics, check the stick and get on your way out, unless of course it was your intention to leave anyway and fabricate a half truth story that got more legs than you expected,,, well done dad

MLSE - "hey, you cant walk with that stick but we'd be happy to hold it for you"

Them - "No thanks we were already leaving".

....what assholes. We should be celebrating Suzuki doing a cool thing for that kid who will never forget it for the rest of his life, but instead, it's this lying garbage.

Walking the concourse with 10 minutes remaining in the game... they may have been heading out to beat the rush anyway...
They travel to watch their team on the road and leave when it’s 3-2?

Maybe dad just had enough? Kid had a bloody lip, it’s getting late, kid does NOT want to turn over the stick because it’s the greatest thing he’s ever gotten, teams losing, not serving beer anymore lol... call it a night.

Just spitballing but anyone here with kids who ever took a youngish one to a game can see that shaking down, not a huge stretch.

Habs fans lying... what else is new.

There are protocols at the game. May be MLSE should put this on the ticket they sell or put it on their website so there is no "confusion" in future.

Making a "thing" of a non-issue; smells like a habs fan

And of course goes without saying. f*** the habs. Loser franchise
