Are the players going to have to spend a few days in a quarantine both in and out of Latvia and the tournament itself would be in a bubble?

If so I guess there will be difficulties finding players who want to be in the tournament.

The worlds is a different species for many players. While many North Americans look down on the games, Europeans view differently and are quicker to grab a jersey and jump on the ice. I will use Alex O of the caps as an example. Russia always kept a spot open for him because they knew the moment the caps(if they got knocked out of the playoffs) he would jump on the first flight to where ever the games were being played.

It wont be the same if no fans are allowed thou.

I wish we could have players with same mentality like Ovechkin. Many finns just look for excuses not to participate, some times pretty lame ones... I expect most of our players declining the invitation this spring again. Not only nhl:ers but also khl-players.

This year it is not an excuse if you don't want to be in a tournament which really shouldn't even happen.

The covid-situation is not going to be much better at the end of May so in order to organise a safe tournament you must create bubble-conditions including a few days of quarantine at a hotel..

Just not worth it!

Being told more info coming later this week or early next week on whether fans will be allowed in the stands from other countries.

Looks like Riga is gearing up to have SOME fans in the stands but it is not known if they will allow foreign fans into the games

Would like to ask our friends if anybody knows if Kalervo Kummola is in Moscow today.

Have you heard anything new?

With only two months until puck drop, I'm beginning to accept that I won't be making the trip, but I wish the IIHF would just make it official.

48 hours ago I was hearing that is was 50/50 for visiting fans. With what has happened in the last 24 hours my Hope's are not high.

Both by contacts with the Finish and Swedish contingents believe if fans are allowed it will only to people from Riga and no foreign fans.

What happened that altered likelihood of fans?

I I like to see Power, Beniers, Eklund , wallstand and other youngsters playing for their national teams

Thanks for the update. I figured as much...looks like the passport will remain blank for another year. :thumbd:

On April 6th the Latvian government will make decisions on what is going on in the country.

Over the last 2 weeks they have seen a sharp increase in covid cases

Covid cases are decreasing in Latvia since early-mid January... the problem is expected 3rd wave of covid outbreak.

Some glimpses of how the Covid protocol will look like:

Four bubble principle introduced - players and coaches, staff, media and fans (if any), essentially these groups would not mix with others in any way. Players staying at a single hotel, each team has their own dedicated floors, active testing program. A separate hotel for referees, and separate hotels for other staff/media.

Teams will have to arrive by May 16, no exhibition games can be played in Riga, players will have to stay in the hotel for 2 days, before even any team practice is allowed. Additional 6 players may arrive during tournament - self-isolate for 2 days, then can practice for 3 days with team and only then join games. If exhibition games are scheduled before coming to Riga, their health protocol has to be approved by IIHF.

N.B. A side note - even though C19 rates are decreasing in Latvia, due to expected third wave and overall precaution due to very low vaccination rates and bad management of second wave I don't see any chance of self-isolation rules to be lifted for foreign tourists by WC. I would say there is only a 1:4 likelihood of let's say 1000 local fans being let in Arena Riga.

Based on the media credentialing application, it looks like foreign journalists will be doing everything via video conferencing. There was some section about requesting access for different sites, but I'd put money on that being for Latvians only if non-competitors are present.

Just came to post this. A few Swedish journalist are not happy

Talk to a couple of Finnish reporters I know, and they are saying each delegation can bring a crew with them and that is it. Sounds like their will be strict rules across the board
