I was thinking if this team does move Mo in favour of Dougie, we could see a defence corps like:

Muzzin-Hamilton: Super Pairing
Dermott-Brodie: Finally get Dermott into the top four and Brodie should be able to insulate him
Sandin-Holl/Bogosian/Liljegren: Don't really care who plays here.

I don't get it... Every single year, Rielly is one of our very few players that plays better in the playoffs than the regular season and people still want him gone.

Since he plays better in the playoffs than the regular season, he is likely to have a caphit that is lower than his on ice value when it actually matters (the playoffs).


All of our other players have typically been better in the regular season (so far) or the same... Rielly is one of the few guys that steps it up when we need him to and I think he should be our 2nd most untouchable player after Matthews at the moment.

What kind of asset are you talking about? Moving a top pairing defenseman to a team with no players that isn't trading their 1st round pick seems incredibly ridiculous to me...

Most teams that traded an asset last expansion draft to make Vegas take a certain player ended up significantly worse overall than if they just let then pick a player.

I think it would be a proper reaction for TO to trade Rielly if he doesn't sign rather than have him walk because he can't be afforded. It's not a condemnation of Rielly, it's more of a not wanting TO to lose him in the same way Hy will probably go.

We can't and absolutely shouldn't be self-renting rielly. It would be a disastourous decision

Offer him 8 years 50M, works to basically his caphit + 1.2 Kessel retention (6.25M but close enough)

If he takes it we keep our 1D and best defenseman for the foreseeable future.

If not you shop him for a stud forward. I'd offer an extended Rielly to Chicago if he was willing to sign for Domnik Kuablik + their 2021 1st in this draft

There is no way the Leafs could afford to lose Rielly for nothing...he's too valuable of an asset...either he signs or he gets traded this summer for value...the Leafs have been bleeding draft picks through bad trades like for Foligno and their prospect pool is depleting badly through bad picks like Korshkov and Bracco.

I don't think we could afford Hamilton...he'll easily costs over $7.5 million per year...and I'd prefer someone meaner on the backend.
