In the summer with both teams having a disappointing playoffs (leafs fate not determined yet but I can't see us winning this series vs FLR now) a retool trade may be in works

Kings deal - Kevin Fiala - 4 years at 7.875M

Leafs deal - Morgan Rielly - 5 years at 7.5M

The Kings assuming they dont/can't bring back Gavrikov may look for a LHD who can play in the top 4. Rielly could be of interest for that situation. Kings take risk as Rielly had a 40 pt season which is down from his usual 50 pt self but his PP time was reduced heavily. They may see Rielly as a good fit to play with Doughty if they look retool the team in the summer.

Leafs would be looking for a marner - lite replacement who is hopefully less dumb come playoffs and makes a lot less. We take gamble that fiala works with the leafs and can bounce back from a slightly disappointing season.

Rielly has a NMC so this assumes that is waived for LA. Fiala not sure if he has a NMC but again if he does let's assume he's willing to come to Toronto.

Is this a deal that could work or be a basis for a deal which could be made in the summer?

Beyond being a top-4 left shot D, how are Gavrikov and Rielly remotely comparable? Gavrikov is one of the better defensive D-men in the NHL and Rielly is PMD. I don't see how Rielly could be a fit for LA considering who they have on the right side and the role they'd need replaced.

I dont know if there are many d-man who would replace Gavrikov play type on the market.

Provorov maybe, but he'll cost more than Gavrikov.

The Kings would be wanting an LHD and may change their backend build to be more offensively focused in this scenario with Clarke and Rielly + Doughty being used to push offense and then Spence + Edmunson + Anderson used for defensive focus minutes. Would need to upgrade on one of Edmonton or Spence to make it work though.

The problem is they need to replace Rielly and how do you do that?

You are creating a hole in the top 4 and trading your only puck moving D.

It's interesting but unless there was a subsequent move for a Byram or a Provorov

I can't see it.

If that is what LA wants to do, why not just trade Fiala for a Gavrikov replacement?

I just don't see why they would want Rielly, they don't need him on the PP and they can find better fits 5v5.

Fiala is Marner lite ...Leafs are considering moving away from Marner, and certainly wouldnt want to take on a lesser version, especially at that big a cap hit.

Rielly may be asked to wave for a shakeup, but, it would likely be for another 'change of scenery' RHD puck mover or a C that can fill the #2C spot. perhaps a Rielly for Hronek type move (only suggesting because Rielly is from Vancouver, and the Hughes-Buffalo stuff) is what i would expect, or to a team that wants a more veteran RHD and has a young one to flip, like SJ or CHi.

Dont think LA is looking to move Fiala either

Not a chance from LA. Fiala is our best offensive catalyst and has meshed well with Byfield while doing a lot of growing up this year. After they played together the last half of the season both were much improved versions of themselves going just under a ppg.

LA is for better or worse in win now mode which means they need that tandem to step up as our number 1 line.

Better of to give Gavrikov the raise then loose Fiala.

Would rather look at something like Matthews + (Robertson / Holmberg) for Byfield + Fiala + pick. Or something like that.

Rielly, the D and goaltending are not the issue in Toronto. It's top 6 forwards.

Reilly is certainly a problem. He's consistently on the ice for goals against and was a big time minus player on one of the top teams in the league.

Easier to replace Marner/Fialia in FA than Rielly. Not that I am a HUGE fan of Rielly or that I think Toronto cant move him, but Fiala isnt really what they need and Toronto would go from “weak 1D” to “arguably weakest 1D in the league”

Reilly has been overrated in the past, but he's not the Leafs problem... They need more Reilly's if anything and less perimeter forwards if they want to compete in the playoffs.

We finally fixed Fiala and we are keeping him.

I agree and as an outside observer, Reilly isnt the problem.

It is time again when Leafs fans thinking about trading their underperforming playoff players for good value in return.

It will be Reilly, Mathews and who else?

The problem is that everybody can see how bad Toronto stars in playoffs.

I doubt you will be receiving value you are looking for.

P.S. Fiala with his salary is perfect in LA.

Kings will also, not trade to you Kempe, Byfield and Clarke.

How about what do you want for Doughty instead?
I'd have done Tavares at 11M for Doughty at his cap hit if he had another year or two

But besides him we dont have a AAV wed move for Doughty (no to Matthews and Nylander and Marner is leaving as a UFA most likely)

Doughty trade doesn't work with the leafs having no 1sts till 2028 and only Cowan and Danford as prospects of value
