Prospect Info: Ridly Greig (LW) 28th Overall

Rossi is a better player than Greig no doubt about it. Great 2 way center who has a good motor. He’s excellent, and that’s no slight on Greig.
Id rather have greig. He suits his role better. I don't think youre winning anything with Rossi in a role he is effective. Just not how to structurally build a team.

Not to say Rossi isn't good but you need a 6'2 + 1st line center that can actually score ALOT. How many of those exist?

Then you need a 6'3 third line center too to insulate him.

Way easier to have a small thick heavy winger.

Can't say enough about this kid, he's such a key piece and I love how he plays the game.

Dorion buggered up so many things, but that 2020 1st round draft was absolutely perfect. Was pretty cool seeing the 3 of them combine on the game winner against the Lightning tonight
The 2020 draft is hands down the best draft in franchise history

Still should have picked Peterka and Faber in the 2nd round...

I think it's better to focus on the positive given that the haul Ottawa got in 2020 is literally the reason this team is a playoff group right now. Every fan base would be ecstatic to walk away from a single draft with Stutzle, Sanderson, Grieg, Kleven, and Merilainen.

And sure, it's obvious now that Peterka was the better choice over Jarventie. Even back then it was widely criticized, but he got passed on by a lot of teams as his ranking was around the mid 20's. McKenzie had him a spot above Grieg and people were already upset that we took Grieg there instead of JJP. Probably a few people now that still think that way (personally I would rather have Grieg).

At the time, it felt like Grieg and Peterka were similar players - undersized guys with an endless motor and a bit of skill. We just drafted one so they took a chance on a bigger guy who could blast the puck by goalies from distance. Robi could have been a Heatleyish sniper had he panned out. Unfortunately he's had injury problems and there was also a question about drive which seemed to improve over the years, but we'll never know now. But when you think about it, that's exactly the type of player the Sens desperately need now. He didn't pan out and that's the chance you take with drafting. Sometimes you'll hit the jackpot and get Tage Thompson outside the top 20, most times you get...Robi Jarventie.

Faber was not regarded as a 1st round pick by anybody and really exceeded expectations. Going back to McKenzie's list, Faber was 56th which was even after Jarventie. I've heard lots of people say how we'd be better off sticking with McKenzie's list over what we actually do, but in this case by the time the 44th pick was up for grabs, the next 3 players still left would have been Jeremie Poirier (33), Jan Mysak (34), and Tyler Kleven (36).

In the case of Faber; he would look great on the right side of Sanderson for the next 10 years, but another thing this club desperately needs is a big fella back there that can hurt people. Kleven is decent already and only just starting to show what he can do. Now no GM would trade Faber for Kleven without getting fired, but he's still a really good pick with lots of potential to become a solid top 4 D that's hard to play against. I'm happy with having Kleven, and you are typically hard pressed to come up with a better option in the middle of the 2nd round unless you look back in hindsight at the should've/could've guys that were picked later. The trade to get this pick was also heavily criticized because Toronto used their selections later on to grab a skinny defenseman and a short forward that are still in the AHL 5 years later.

This draft IS the reason Ottawa is a playoff team right now and every team every year has players they wished to have picked in the spot they did when their choice didn't pan out. Most fans will look at it with jealousy so I don't think they should've changed a thing

It has to be one of the best drafts for any franchise.

The Stars had the Robertson draft, which was great, but I think you will have to go back to when scouting wasn't so pervasive to get so many top players in 1 draft.

Again, with a slight adjustment and getting Faber or JJ...wow.

Craziest thing is if Harley was still available, 2019 would have also been a strong draft with Harley, Pinto, and Kastelic. Harley was the number 1 pick on the Sens scouting list in the late 10s range. In fact Dallas screwed us twice. In 2017, our number 1 pick in the late 20s range was Oettinger...
