Rick Tocchet not returning to the Canucks

Yeah I mean, why would he return there? The Canucks are a mess and it was easy to tell that last year was a fluke.

Who cares? He sucks as a head coach anyway.

Not sure why people love him so much. One playoff berth in a season that wasn't abruptly halted by a pandemic.

The people who run Vancouver also suck, so they'll probably bring in some other shitty coach to replace him with.

Like a rat from a sinking ship. On the one hand, can't really blame Tocchet for realizing that he's going to have to run a team with a "mercurial" star that has to frustrate the daylights out of coaches, no second line Center, losing a top line winger for nothing...and really not a whole else to look forward to for help. Not to mention, it appears as though it's a drama factory, for whatever reason. Playing that out on a "lame duck" contract would probably be suicidal for his career. Better to just jump ship while you can still write this year off as a fluke confluence of events.

On the other hand...you have to hold a coach accountable for things, when a team ends up having such an absurd amount of drama around it all the time. A big part of a good coach's job, is managing the personalities in the room, getting through to "difficult" players, etc. Seems Tocchet couldn't do those things in Vancouver, even if it is a particularly challenging group in a really negative, prying media market that thrives off the drama and dysfunction.

I liked the structure Tocchet brought to a team that badly needed it and what that accomplished last year. But it seems pretty clear that he's a short shelf-life guy and had worn pretty thin, and running out of ideas in Vancouver with this group of players. So whatever. Bye. I just hope they don't botch the replacement. Bring back AV or something.

Can’t have shit in Vancouver

So does Sullivan, but I've been calling Sullivan to the Rangers for like 2 years now.

I also feel like Boston could be a candidate. He coached there years ago, but I think he'd come back if they wanted him.

I bet the Rangers already printed out a contract for him even before the Tocchet news came out,

I've been critical of his coaching style pretty much the whole season, so I won't lose any sleep over it. The constantly low shot totals were frustrating to watch (were lucky to have 5 shots after 20mins, or 10 after 30) and it routinely silenced the home crowd. They were also way too lackadaisical in OT, which probably cost them a playoff berth. Their best forwards weren't shooting the puck near enough, cuz they were busy cycling on the perimeter and deferring to the likes of Myers/Forbort/Juulsen. It was like he didn't know how to coach to the teams strengths.

Like any coach many questioned his decision making at times personally I thought he did well with what he had to work with.

Rumour has it he really wanted a practice rink which ownership still hasn’t made any progress. I believe the Canucks are one of few teams without a practice rink close by.

Not sure what ownership is thinking on this if you want to win, then it’s something that should be invested in.

Mixed feelings. Thought he’d stay.

Good coach. Sometimes not the most exciting style of hockey. Dump, chase, repeat. But undeniably organised and structured. Don’t like how he’s handled Pettersson the past 18 months at all. Or the drama between him and Miller.

Who we’ll get in as a replacement scares me.

Cheap owner
Giving 11 million to a player that doesn’t deserve it and can’t get along with his teammates is probably more or less more of an impact.

Also having a GM that has to constantly make trades to correct for his mistakes in signings and other trades doesn’t help.

This news isn't exactly out of left field. It's been speculated for a while that he might leave. With more and more coaching vacancies, and given the not-so-stellar season the Canucks just had, there very well may be more attractive options for Tocchet at the moment. And he should be getting big contract offers I'd imagine.
Yeah, I don't think Tocchet is a big loss, it just feels like there is a lack of cohesive process or steering of this ship.

Jesus. WTF is going on in Vancouver.
Tocchet used the Canucks to relaunch his coaching career which he did. Now he's looking for bloated contract and has tons of options. He is a fully Americanized easterner who couldn't give a single f*** about Vancouver. He can coach for NY, Pit or Philly. And they will give him 5-6 million with term.

A bloated tocchet deal would have been a disaster in Van. But shorter term, it would have been fine if he stayed for 3 years , 2.5 million. So whatever.
