Like a rat from a sinking ship. On the one hand, can't really blame Tocchet for realizing that he's going to have to run a team with a "mercurial" star that has to frustrate the daylights out of coaches, no second line Center, losing a top line winger for nothing...and really not a whole else to look forward to for help. Not to mention, it appears as though it's a drama factory, for whatever reason. Playing that out on a "lame duck" contract would probably be suicidal for his career. Better to just jump ship while you can still write this year off as a fluke confluence of events.
On the other hand...you have to hold a coach accountable for things, when a team ends up having such an absurd amount of drama around it all the time. A big part of a good coach's job, is managing the personalities in the room, getting through to "difficult" players, etc. Seems Tocchet couldn't do those things in Vancouver, even if it is a particularly challenging group in a really negative, prying media market that thrives off the drama and dysfunction.
I liked the structure Tocchet brought to a team that badly needed it and what that accomplished last year. But it seems pretty clear that he's a short shelf-life guy and had worn pretty thin, and running out of ideas in Vancouver with this group of players. So whatever. Bye. I just hope they don't botch the replacement. Bring back AV or something.
