Everyone knows the economic term ROI, which means return on investment. Let's talk about ROH - return on hype. Let's say that Sidney Crosby is the standard of ROH, i.e. 1/1. How would you rate other players on this scale? For example, Kucherov 2 to 1, Zetterberg and Datsyuk 3 to 1 each.

If Crosby is the standard than very very few players will be higher than 1:1. (Thinking only of modern players, last 20ish years, I don't know the hype variable involved in previous "eras".) Maybe guys like Kaprizov.

For me the challenge is that the ability and propensity to "hype" has gone nuclear. Over and over we see foolish talk about who is "generational" or not.

Poor Connor Bedard -- he's going to have to score 1 million goals to meet your Crosby 1/1 standard.

And that's no slam on Bedard -- he's obviously a very special player. It's just that the hype machinery is silly these days. The PR pros get it started and the fans take it from there.

God forbid you say something like "let's see how player X does over a sizeable span of seasons". Almost immediately you have some drama queen hardo all over you, acting like you've just taken a dump on the Pope's slippers.

No, not even close. I'd say Crosby exceeded the hype, but at the same time, the hype was quite huge....so for the sake of this discussion we could say his performance = hype coming in....so 1:1. There will be mountains of players that would be greater than that. So a guy who is nowhere near the level of a player as Crosby could exceed that simply because there may be little to no hype at all.
