Sportsnet Retool or rebuild? Taking stock of the Bruins after disappointing season

Will never happen but I sit out the majority of July 1. The class may be the worst I have ever seen.

I would target cheaper guys with offensive skill, two RFA I like are Tomasino and Holtz, the later which was waived I believe this year. Maybe pick up a couple non tendered guys (Strome was a missed opportunity years ago) Could look to 1 year veterans you could move at the deadline.

One guy I might spend a little extra on is RD Dante Fabbro..I think his best hockey is in front of him, plus he's young-ish. Fits the longer term plan. I re-sign Geekie

I commit to Lysell and Minten to start...Poitras is in the lineup. Lauko. Marat. I want to see what I have.
So basically stand pat, grab a bag of magic beans & hope for the best. Burn another year of Pastrnak’s prime.

I get it, that plan would land you another top 5 pick in 2026 draft. I think Sweeney & Neely on the hot seat. I don’t see them standing pat and analyzing what they have in Lysell

team stinks. You going to sign a couple hugely priced guys, hope they pan out so you get a 7 or 8 seed and 3 home play-off games? They've had super teams around Pasta and they won nothing. this team is not a couple pieces away. If you want to deal some of those futures for young core pieces do it, but nobody is doing that.

This team has a "core"

McAvoy, Pastrnak, (and people may respectfully disagree with this) Swayman

There's a very good chance they add another in the first round this season. There's a smaller chance that you could add Lohrei to this list as well, depending on his progress.

You don't burn this down. You add to it.

A rotten apple core?

I think some of the top players in this free agent class are actually pretty interesting, but you can't build a winner through free agency.... I also think they are beyond dipping into the bargain bin. Just stay in house with players like Poitras, Lysell, Minton, Khusnutdinov, Merk etc. Don't need guys Jones, Tufte, Johnson, Lettieri being given the inside edge in training camp again.

Love the Fabbro suggestion. Though I think the cat might be out of the bag on that one. Not sure it would be wise to commit more big money to the backend with the holes they have upfront.

I think you have to try to re-tool. Rebuilding would require a complete teardown IMO. Once you go down that road, it's essentially accepting a slow recovery... with a high chance of re-injury. I simply don't agree with the bottoming out strategy. It might happen organically, but if you go into the season with absolutely no intentions of competing, that is the absolute worst environment to develop players in. Look at Buffalo for the past ten years... or now Chicago. Countless other organizations. Hard to shed that losing culture.

what about something like this? Granted not winning a cup

Geekie-Lindholm-Pasta

Kuzmenko-Mittelstadt-Poitras (could be an awful defensive line however maybe bring back the great Reilly Smith?...Maybe Marchand on a higher money deal for less years?) Maybe try to get Neighbours out of Stl?

Khus-Zacha-Lysell

Lauko-Minten-Kastelic

Zad-Mac
Lindholm-Fabbro
Lohrei-Peeke

Goalies.

I think you make everyone but Pasta, Zadorov and Mcavoy “available”, but there’s no way there’s going to be a complete tear-down. The Jacob’s family has shown over the years that they want to remain competitive and won’t settle for growing pains of a total rebuild.
I would try to move Swayman, but I think we’re stuck with him at least until he hopefully turns things around. We need to make the best of it, but I can’t imagine a more disliked player in such a vital role.
I think we can also plan on more Sweeney and Neely leading the charge. The Jacob’s are clearly ok with nearly complete incompetence which may or may not be due to pictures owned by Sweeney.
My guess is we will see two impactful trades and a couple free agent signings as part of a “retool”. The bottom line is we need to trust Sweeney to successfully accomplish something he hasn’t been able to do in one summer what he hasn’t been able to do in a decade despite being handed a loaded roster. :help:

Tank another year. Fill up the pool. Then go buy. If they don’t, they’ll be up against the cap all the time and not be able to do anything. JMO.

saw Hampus last night at game was in good spirits

I’d like to put him and McAvoy in and play Leafs in round 1. I’ll take Boston.

I love Neighbors and maybe he’s the guy Monty singles out and Bruins can grab like Geekie

Did you have The Lighthouse Cold Platter? Yeah Geekie was a great signing. How much do you think resigning him will be?

I go clam plate with onion rings or clam chowder & shrimp scampi

So Geekie ????

A. I’m pretending I’m him
I want 5/30
I take 5.5 but I want 5 years

B. I’m Sweeney/Gold
I offer 5.25 x 4 years

The Bruins need him badly - age, character, ability to play with 88

If he wants 7 that’s what his agent may ask but don’t see a 7 starting when all said and done

I always think what would I want and it’s probably 6 but give me security with 5 years I go $5.5

You offer me 4-something go F off

I was thinking 5x25, but what do I know? I have to wonder how he will respond to a new coach. He sucked when Monty was here. How will he respond to a real coach like Torts, Gallant or Claude? (My top three choices)

5/25 I bet is about what they offer so you know well
He very well could ask for 5/30
They settle for 5/27.5 = $5.5
