Speculation: Retool in LA

I don't want to be the one to break it to the fans but a retool isn't going to cut it. LA is old, has massive $$$ locked in long term and they aren't build for the current meta of the NHL at all.

LA is looking at a long full blown rebuild. Its really just about how soon they want to start it over holding on for ticket sale revenue.

Lewis and Thompson can both be had for picks. Who wants em?
if retooling then LA should not go for picks .

A couple examples based on interest shown in this thread.

Muzzin to NYI for Dal Colle + Ho-Sang
Toffoli to EDM for Puljujarvi + Kassian

Add NHL ready'ish pieces with speed\skill to compliment the older core.

Kempe for Colin White or Logan Brown?

Martinez for Ceci?

I've long admired Kempe from afar but have no idea what the asking price is

No thanks. Isles are building around 21 yr old Barzal. Retool,rebuild...call it what you will, but trading skilled kids for 29/30 something yr olds vets is not what the isles should be doing while building around a 21 yr old.

MDC is having a very strong ahl season. His skating reportedly has improved and he is much more involved.

JHS was finally moved up to the 1st line 3 games ago and has responded with 1 g 7 a. Yeah, shocking what getting a chance to play with other skilled forwards can lead to.

Isles are trying to make room on their blueline for Toews, who is nhl ready.

Not trading kids JHS/MDC to add vet defenseman who will be further blocking Toews.

I wouldn't understand trading Carter unless they are going full rebuild. Vilardi is too young IMO to be a productive 2nd line center yet. Kempe isn't that good. Maybe it's just me, but Kopitar-Carter is something they have to keep around to be a tough playoff matchup. The pieces around those guys and Doughty should be moving.

Not saying you are wrong but a re-tool is LA's only option. They have contracts that are not able to be moved to players that are good enough to keep them out of a top 5 pick.

Lol does every leaf/king proposal have to include Nylander/Doughty.

Kings fans...I'm interested in Muzzin and Clifford. What are the prices for them individually?

Clifford = 3rd round pick
Muzzin is where it gets tricky. My preference would be to get a player who is not in the NHL but is looking really good and like he will be in the NHL as early as next season. For me that player would either be a RHD or a speedy forward. In addition I would want a conditional pick based. Condition wold be how many rounds the acquiring team goes. The further the team goes the better pick LA gets

Speedy forward = Andreas Johnsson? And then a Prospect like Sandin and pick?

I mean you say that but here we are with them a bottom 5 team. A re-tool is the idea that you can make a few swaps and have a chance to be a contender again which LA really doesn't. So its a rebuild and the contracts only will make it a much longer one

Do you really think LA will continue to be a bottom 5 team? Do Vegas and Florida need to tear things apart too?

I think they're old and slow, and completely locked into their current roster. Recently firing their coach isn't a good sign either. Even if they aren't bottom 5, there is very little chance they make the playoffs. They barely made it in last year and then got straight dumptrucked.

LV and FLA are in completely different situations, esp LV who has played great and just gotten unluckly.

1) So we are agreed they are locked into contract. My point was because of that the only way to have success while those contracts are on the books is via re-tool.
2) Due to the piss-poor start the season agreed playoffs are a long shot but i am not writing off till after November. They have a lot of divisional games in November and the Pacific is weak
3.a) Yes they got swept but the goal differential was only 4 in the whole series, far from dump trucked
3.b) they barely made it in in 2012 and things worked out ok. Obviously that is not the standard but 8th seeds to well in the NHL compared to other sports. Sometimes you just need to get in.
