I'm doing a little research on former NHL players who have gained a lot of weight since retiring.

This is the list I have so far:

Keith Tkachuk

Eric Lacroix

Brett Hull

Adam Deadmarsh

Kevin Stevens

Peter Worrell

Tony Amonte

Stan Johnathan

Anybody know of anymore?

Eric Lindros hasn't looked very good for quite a few years now, probably since he retired.

Marty Brodeur has looked like he's been indulging in calories quite a bit since he retired. In before the ''He was fat as a player too'' jokes.

What I'm guessing happens is that these guys as players are consuming a MASS amount of calories daily. Then when they retire, they are still eating the same amount but are not using as many calories each day, due to not playing anymore and not working out and not needing as many calories. So they turn into fat and thus the weight gain.

They are also getting old. Your metabolism slows down.

That it does, but when a player quickly gains a lot of weight not too long after retiring, I tend to believe it's because they're eating the same amount of calories as when they were still playing, only they're body doesn't need/isn't using that same level of calories any longer and it's turning into fat because they have a calorie surplus.

Whereas they wouldn't have had this surplus (unless they were building muscle) when they were playing, because they would use pretty much all the calories they consumed, between playing and practicing and working out off ice. I'm sure there are even many players that tend to do this during the offseason when they're not training, who then gain a few pounds over the offseason. Then need to lose it come August.

It is exactly this ^^, happens across many retired pro sport athletes (NBA, NFL, etc.).

I don't buy the "slower metabolism" argument. That's the most BS excuse for weight gain in adulthood I've ever heard. People drive around everywhere instead of walking when they are adults with jobs, don't have time/energy to work out anymore, no more phys-ed classes to force you to either. Hence adults get fat.

While the basal metabolic rate (baseline calories burnt by your body) will decrease when you have less muscle (less muscle mass to maintain = less energy (calories) needed), your metabolism itself won't just suddenly slow down from 35 to 40 years old.

And yeah, pro athletes are known to easily consume >5000 calories every day to keep up with their training regimen.

Yeah.

I only started learning about all of this about 2.5 years ago, when I decided to start losing weight and it's because of my knowledge on calorie consumption and counting calories, that has kept me able to maintain my weight since then.

If you're consuming 5000 calories a day and are no longer a player, you're probably not using all of those calories anymore, whatever is left over is being stored as fat. 3500 calories consumed more than burned is a pound of fat gained and 3500 burned more than consumed is a pound of fat lost. It's possible some of these guys genetically are able to continue eating at that rate and not gain much weight. Or some of these guys might still be hitting the gym and working out daily and maintaining their playing weight and muscle, or at least close to it. Or some of them might just not be eating at the rate they were and are eating at a pace that they have no surplus of calories.

There are a few guys that have managed to stay in shape or even look to thin out, Dave Cameron comes to mind. He was a terrible, terrible hockey player (and terrible coach too) but he manages to stay slim. He almost looks too skinny and sickly. He's real gaunt looking.

Laraque looked bigger in his jersey on the rexall closing night than he did when he played with us wearing equipment.

Patrick Roy doesn't look very good sometimes, though his weight seems to go up and down.

Sometimes I feel like his face is really full looking, then he'll look thinner again. I remember thinking his face was very full and chunky looking back in the late 00's. Then when he started coaching for the Avs, he looked thinner than that, like he had lost the weight that he appeared to have gained.

Then in the last couple years, his face has started to puffy again and he almost looks like he's about to pop out of his suit. I recall him saying that he was trying to lose weight for that alumni game they were doing before their stadium series game last year.

Chris Therrien would have been on this list in 2014, but dropped 82 lbs before the start of the 2015-16 season.

There's a Canadiens' old timer's game clip wherein Ken Dryden looks wide enough to fill his net completely.

I saw Dryden last year. He looked pretty good. Must have trimmed back down a fair bit.

On the topic…aren't we all a little above our playing weight?

Most perhaps... though in my case quite the opposite... when I played I averaged around 180/175... then when I quit.. dropped to like 155/160....
mind ye', mightve been the heroin Cf.... Hell of a weight loss program.. though I dont believe recommended by the AMA, CMA... Jenny Craig.

He looks good AND he even kept his manly looking shoulders, unlike some people who lose a ton of weight and get girly shoulders *cough* me *cough*

Speaking of old goalies from that era, John Davidson looks incredibly huge. I watched him walk up to the podium at the last few drafts and he's struggling. He was big back in the 90's and as far back as I remember him being a Rangers/national TV color commentator, but not quite as big as now.

And I don't really remember what he looked like as a player. I can't find any full body shots of him from back in the day, where he isn't wearing his equipment. He had the Frank Zappa 70's stache though.
