Resign Klingberg or not? How much?

This is why GM’s make the big bucks! Long term could find us in LTIR. If he agrees to 1 year cheap the following season sees Ekholm Kulak Walman and Klingberg UFA when yer money is all going to McDavid. So easy to paint yourself into a corner

The cap next year will be at least $95.5M, and in the year McDavid's deal starts it is expected to jump to $104M. The year after that we are looking at $113.5M. And these may actually go even higher. With so many key players on longer deals the cap should open up substantially. Next year is the last year that there may be a bottle neck.

Klingberg and Brown might be playing their way off next year's Oilers team if they continue with their strong playoff play. Pretty sure they will be offered bigger contracts elsewhere. But if winning is their #1 priority... maybe they will take less to stay here. Hoping Perry comes back next year as well.

If Bouchard takes a 8M x 2 years bridge, and we move on from one of Henrique/Arvid or both. We can re-sign everyone except for Jeff Skinner.

If we trade Stuart and bring in one of Hofer/Soderblom in the offseason with the idea of bringing in Gibson at the deadline, we would be in a good situation.

If we factor how much Brown has been making over the 2 years here including bonus, he's making 2.9M/yr so I expect him to re-sign for somewhere close to 2M-3M.

Klingberg I expect him to re-sign for 2.5M-3.5M.

Frederic I can see signing for 2.5M-3M x 1 year to boost his numbers here and sign in St. Louis after that.

I get the feeling klingberg will be looking to take a bit of a discount for some stability

I'm guessing a 3x3.25 deal is signed
If I were him I’d do 1 year. He seems healthy now but didn’t get to really prove himself for a bigger contract.

He probably thinks about the extra 50mil that should be in his name every night, I would.

Jeezuz... we should sign Bouchard to long term this year then (if possible).

Imagine in three years time you could theoretically have a roster with 12 guys making $1M (ELCs + Perry, Janmark, Brown types) and still have $100M to spend on the remaining ten guys! Yikes.

There is going to be HUGE inflationary pressure on salaries. A bridge on Bouch will make us pay big time in the long term.

AFP has him projected at 1 year x $1,999,770. Would do.

And if you are unfamiliar...

Contract Projections – AFP Analytics there is a link for 2025-26 projections.

I was going to say 2 x 2 - 2.5. He still has issues getting turnstiled (see Adrian Kempe in Game 6) but I think that range is fair and 2 years should be ok if you wanted to drive the number down a bit. Could be a very decent number 6 RD for you paired with Kulak next season or even with Nurse.

If Nurse was paid correctly, you could essentially fit him and Klingberg under that 9.25M price point and maybe Emberson as well.

McDavid is only going to cost the Oilers 2to 2.5 more than he is already getting , Bouchard is going to be the cap pain

I doubt Brown wants to pack up and move again , he loves Edmonton

Brown feels like a guy who would take something like the Janmark deal to stay and win since he already signed so cheap this year. Maybe like 3x1.5. No way to know with Klingberg. You’ve got to think the contract mistake is potentially playing a role in his decision going forward. Maybe goes to free agency, and circles back if he doesn’t get a bag

Brown definitely. He'll be in the Foegele situation. Klinberg might actually take a one year deal, given his age and injury history. But maybe some bottom feeder will take a chance on him on a two or three year contract.

I think he will get closer to three million. He's a legit 3rd liner this year.

They will also shed a lot of money in the next few years: Neal buyout gone, Kane won't be re-signed after next year (or will sign at a lower rate), Henrique, Skinner, Arvidsson, Perry, Eklholm, Walman, Kulak also likely have a limited shelf life as Oilers. That's about 2+5+4+3+3+6+1 +3.5+2.7=almost 30 million without the rising cap by 2026. they really only have Nurse and Campbell's buyout as bad contracts. But the pipeline is empty, so they will need to continue finding Podkolzins, Perrys and Browns at 1M a piece.
