Resign Klingberg or not? How much?

Because EDM is moving the puck faster. You can't skate faster than the puck. Players like Kingberg and Bouchard have been really making quick passes and stretching the passes up the ice. It's the best way to break a heavy forecheck.
Not looking ahead- but IF Edmonton and Florida were to meet in the finals again- that first pass will be huge. Last year, the Rangers sucked, but they exposed Florida’s forecheck with how efficient they were at moving the puck out.

They will also shed a lot of money in the next few years: Neal buyout gone, Kane won't be re-signed after next year (or will sign at a lower rate), Henrique, Skinner, Arvidsson, Perry, Eklholm, Walman, Kulak also likely have a limited shelf life as Oilers. That's about 2+5+4+3+3+6+1 +3.5+2.7=almost 30 million without the rising cap by 2026. they really only have Nurse and Campbell's buyout as bad contracts. But the pipeline is empty, so they will need to continue finding Podkolzins, Perrys and Browns at 1M a piece.
Losing Ekholm, Walman, Kulak and Perry will hurt. Those guys will need to be replaced with similar players, not taking cheap deals to play here.

It will be hard, near impossible to ice a team stronger than this years.
We had to make similar sacrifices last year but still managed to become as good if not stronger by giving up picks\prospects and finding hidden gems to replace McLeod, Foegele, Broberg, Ceci, Hollloway etc.

Losing the players you mentioned will hurt for sure but there is still enough to get past them and possible ice a better team.

The OIlers are now following a Detroit model. Having a couple of superstars locked long-term, and looking for cheap veterans to fill the key support roles. It is actually much easier to do than finding franchise players (which the Oilers struggled with between 2006-2015). Ultimately, Foegele, Broberg, Ceci and similar players are replaceable.

The Detroit model also included signing veterans for too long, lol. I hope we keep some of these veterans, as long as we don't overpay them.

I would actually hope that a part of our model is locking up a sound defense core long term. Good defensemen don't grow on trees. I'm hopeful that we can extend Ekholm to reasonable deals to finish up the rest of his career, and can extend both Walman and Kulak as well. I don't want any more Ceci's or to rely on hoping a Klingberg mid-season signing that just happens to refind his game in the playoffs happens every year. Lock up that blueline by getting a 2 -3 year extension for Kulak and a 4 - 5 year extension for Walman (assuming reasonable asks in salary), signing Bouchard to his extension, and hopefully getting Ekholm to keep signing 1 year deals as his age progresses and role decreases on the team. Re-signing Klingberg would be grand, but I can see him chasing the money after turning down the big deal he was offered from Dallas a few years back.

Broberg should have been signed. He would have solved the top 4 for a long time. I don't mind if they extend Ekholm, Kulak and Walman to similar deals.

At the price point he got it was an easy pass.
Broberg would have struggled to make the lineup this season and wouldve likely made us ship Kulak out to make room for him.

Broberg shouldve been signed around 2.5M per deal, Holloway at just below 2M per.

Walman kind of compensates for the loss of Broberg. They probably can re-sign Ekholm to a lower amount.

if the oilers can pull this off and win the cup, finding bargain players to take a bit less or have returning players take a bit less to run it back will be way easier than if they got bounced in the first round imo

I know that it's only a small sample size, but I'm curious how many people here would be willing to sign John Kilngberg, and for how much / how long.

This is all assuming that his play remains consistent.
I would say no because the Oilers are apparently interested in going after Aaron Ekblad and he ain’t gonna be cheap! If not then I’d go after a guy like RD Dante Fabbro instead if he doesn’t re-sign in Columbus, though he may not be cheap either ? 🤷🏻‍♂️

If his hips are good keep him. Right-handed PMD.

Then again so is Bouchard and Stecher. Wow we're deep

With Bouchards contract coming up, I'm not sure how we can take on yet another 9 million dollar dman in Ekblad. Besides, we already have an "Ek" here. It would make it too confusing in these chats.

I like the guy and if he can keep this up for another month, I would definitely consider re-signing hi, but it has to make sense. If he chases the money, there is no way we can keep him. But if he likes it here, and thinks he can win cups here, and is willing to play within our budget, then he'd be a fine fit.

The Oilers will be a perennial playoff team and contender as long as McDavid and Draisaitl perform at superstar level. They have not had difficulty attracting free agents for years. Such a sharp contrasts, when they had to overpay own players and content themselves with the likes of Sykora in free agency.

i think you keep the devil you know. Bouchard provides elite offense and is reliable defensively. the closest we've had to the number 1 d-man since Souray.

Nurse says no to Ekblad. lol

Only advantage would be if we got EK tatooed on our bulging forearms. That way if there’s two and one gets traded our ink still looks wicked cool.

I don't know either, just going by sports radio chatter on the issue, though I don't believe the Oilers need to pay $9 mil/per to get him here with his injury issues.

The guy is a top pairing dman, former #1 overall pick, SC winner, with some nasty. He's going to get paid.
