Requesting a trade should negate NTC

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
If it's in the CBA players will use it in negociations, as they should. It's really not as simple as you make it look.
Players can ask all they want, but if the team didn't hand it out, they wouldn't receive. It's not a right for players but a condition they can negotiate. GMs have just been stupid, handing them out to every Tom, Dick, and Harry.

Maybe GMs should have the foresight to realize what giving out a NTC could actually mean before offering and signing the player to a contract that includes one. Just a thought.

Honestly kind of astonished a lawyer would consider this a logical argument. Are you a Detroit or Toronto fan?

Most teams give out NTCs. Why is this only relevant to Detroit and Toronto? There's this weird phenomenon that fans support players in disagreements with owners because they hate the fact that owners are billionaires, even though owners' interests align with the fans' interests more often than the player's interests. It's f***ing weird.

I have to agree. This should be talked about and on the table at the next meeting or whatever. Player gets to veto any trade the team wants but if he demands out he loses that right and can be traded anywhere.

Sounds like you’re advocating for a new KIND of NTC.

There’s no incentive for the NHLPA to agree to changing ALL NTC’s to the benefit of the owners and the detriment of its constituency.

I agree with this, the most reasonable take, but I can also read a room-

We gotta burn the players at the stake, and we gotta allow room for incompetent management to do its thing.

A NTC exists for the purpose of the player dictating a trade location if the time comes. It's working as intended. No change needed.

The Larkin situation had me thinking — why should Larkin get to keep the benefits of a NTC when he’s publicly requested that the Wings trade him? The concept of a NTC is that the player can veto a trade destination when the team seeks to move the player. When the player is demanding a trade — which already hamstrings his existing team — seems like the NTC should dissolve to allow the team to get proper value for the player.

I know the NHLPA would never go for this, but seems fair to me.
Fair's got nothing to do with it.

It’s not. I asked because they each have high profile players with NTC’s who are rumored/speculated to want out.

IME the people complaining about NTC’s are usually fans who feel they have hurt their team in some way.

Sure, but it's really relevant to most teams as NTCs are really common. I just don't understand why some fans die on the "defending players against owners" hill no matter what. If the owners get their way their team benefits. Who cares that they're rich?

No. It's a contract clause that is negotiated. GM's shouldn't agree to the clause if they can't handle what comes with it.

Yep, they took a discounted wage for security and getting to choose where to live. GMs should already know and be okay with a NMC contract not getting a bunch of assets in a future trade.

I think a GM can handle this to some degree by saying, ‘hate to lose you, but we’ll look to find a situation that works for both sides. If you want to leave I need 8 teams you’ll approve a trade to. If I get acceptable offers outside the list, I’ll bring them to you as well, as the top 8 may take longer’.

The eight teams will likely be Vegas, Dallas, Tampa, Colorado, Florida, and three rotating options, so those top 5 will still get first crack at a number of players, but Montreal, Philly, NYR, Chicago, Boston, and maybe SJ, Utah, and Anaheim will be on lists.
