Sportsnet: Report: NHL, Rogers agree to 12-year, $7.7B Canadian TV deal

There was a time I would sit and listen to every intermission for Coaches Corner, for the insider scoops.

Now we have a crew of losers like Botteril and pseudo intellectual ref kiss ass Ron McClean (minus Bieksa) to hem and haw over low effort takes.

TSN is better for their panels, but I CANNOT stand Gord Miller and his voice. Mike Johnson keeps it a float. I'd prefer Amazon Prime x TSN Panel for the future but alas.... these f***ing monopolies in Canada perpetuate further with this news.

Soon I'll just be catching the HNIC and playoff games through CBC GEM. Back to the way I grew up without cable except cbc streams now. I'll catch the odd weekday game any way I can but I can't see the sports landscape looking the way it does another 12 years from now.

Yup, I’m over the crappy services with constant price increases, blackouts, and mundane commentary. Canceled practically all of my streaming services recently.

I have cancelled cable and have sailed the seven seas with most of you here. I have no interest in giving my money to either Rogers or Bell. We live in a capitalist society, we should have more than a few choices... same thing with phone plans and wireless data...

Just to throw this out there- capitalism left to itself always trends towards monopoly, it is baked in- and especially industries that rely on infrastructure. ie natural monopolies.

Agreed 100%. I never really watch the build up, intermissions, or aftermath of games. Just the game itself.
I stopped that years ago. The age of social media has turned all analysis/insight into clickbait / rage-bait (or whatever kind of bait term the kids use nowadays) or just plain dumb shit to get attention.

That would be great, pay for those channels anyway and would allow me to get rid of cable.

Amazon might be the only company who can afford to buy Networks, Radio + TV + All their existing live sports contracts.

The biggest hurdle would be the CRTC, but I'm sure they could find a way around it, especially if they decide to overpay Bell by 20%.

If I was the Amazon Canada people I would have already put in the phone call to Bell as soon as those rumours saw the light of day.

I live in Calgary and pay for Sportsnet+ or whatever it is called now so blackouts don't effect me, but I heavily prefer the TSN panel to Sportsnet who just get muted 90% of the time.

Sportsnet+ also has pretty much every NHL game except those on Prime, so as someone who doesn't have cable/tv anymore it works well for me for $250 a year.

Now that Rogers is all set up for another decade-plus of this, I seriously hope they've learned from their mistakes and make the quality of programming much better. Seeing as they've paid more than double they did on the current deal, there is absolutely no reason and excuse for them to chintz out on production, in-game and studio talent by cutting and slashing a good portion of their personnel like they have. You want to have the national rights, act like it.

And for the love of God, please make Saturday night HNiC watching special again. All games they broadcast now, whichever night it may be, all blend together as one. Generic and bland. A Saturday night Habs/Leafs game should have way more hype and cache to it than a Wednesday night Ducks/Leafs game.

Streaming Services have no blackouts, you get all the NHL games, AHL games, WHL games, and more.

I might suggest that we are entering the era, of not selling off Canadian media to Foreign ownership.

Shareholders and money speak louder speak louder than principles. Amazon can easily set up some Canadian owned subsidiary to get around the CRTC. Then offer Bell 50% more than than Rogers ever would to buy it, make a 50 year payment plan at 6% interest. Bell would be stupid not to. Double the price of Prime and get a million new subscribers instantly.

We are going to enter the era of streaming networks live sports.

I've never talked to a hockey fan about streaming/tv rights and access who didn't agree that they'd happily pay $20 a month to watch all the games. Every single one agrees that they'd be more than happy to pay a reasonable price to watch if they could. But the average fan doesn't even know what service they'd have to buy to do it.

I watch HNIC and playoffs on CBC GEM. The rest of the time I just so happen to find a friend out on the open seas who will share a stream with me.

Imagine how much money the NHL would make if they just made the product available to the masses who want to buy it.

Concentration of ownership is a big problem that no one is addressing. Monopolies are just too big now, and politicians are being endlessly lobbied (or bribed) to keep it that way.

Gino Reda: Gentleman, it's expected the NHL will announce its national television rights this week. Reports indicate a multibillion-dollar deal. Darren, could there be more as well?

Darren Dreger: Yeah, there could be Gino. I mean, obviously this is a huge deal for the National Hockey League, the Players Association, NHL owners. To the tune of $11 billion. Rogers paying more than twice their existing agreement, but where it gets really interesting is the nuance of the overall deal and the ongoing negotiating that is available here to the National Hockey League. Sources say that there is still one more night per week available to be negotiated outside of this agreement with Rogers. Now, it's complex and Rogers could get a taste in terms of the finances but also would need to be negotiated is the French language rights. Again, outside of this deal. So, when you see reports of 11 billion or more, the 'or more', is the extra night available to a potential suitor and the French language rights as well.
