In an effort to increase scoring, changes to the goalie pads were agreed to for the new season (and others are being considered)

http://www.thescore.com/nhl/articles/1247736-report-nhl-nhlpa-agree-on-goalie-pad-size-reduction

From that small piece is a larger on from In Goal Magazine where the goalies are balking at the proposed changes

http://ingoalmag.com/news/nhl-goalies-balk-at-separate-thigh-rise-restrictions/

From that article:

As InGoal first reported in mid-July, the Players’ Association agreed to reduce that maximum knee-to-thigh allowance from 55 to 45 per cent. With the average NHL measurement from the center of the knee to the hip around 20 inches, that effectively means a two-inch reduction in maximum pad size, and as much as a four-inch increase in the 5-hole since most goalies use the tops of their pads to close this area when they drop to the ice.

That's pretty bad ass. Does quick have a good 5 hole or an average one?

Cool, I can only imagine with the team the kings are, this will benefit us. Not worried about quick, cuz he hardly lets anything in down low, and is super athletic. Plus we have a great defensive minded team with bangers who like to go in front of the net and slap on in.

I'm pretty sure Quick tweeted or was quoted in an interview earlier this year saying that he already plays with the smaller pads and this decision wouldn't effect him at all.

it's going to effect guys like bernier more than JQ. goalies that play a more traditional butterfly style and are very 'sound' in technique will be effected by this. JQ i take out of this because he has his own hybrid style that encompasses the butterfly techniques, but not to the degree that JB does.

Quick relies as much if not more on his athleticism, than a structured style of goaltending. that structure is there as a foundation, but he has built on top of it with his own unique 'thing'. that is what makes him such a freak and damn difficult to figure out.

watch JB squared to the shooter when he is up and down. his leg positioning is very 'technical' when it comes to how he positions them. the easiest to see is down on his knees. when he is in top form the 'knees' of his pads close together and the 5-hole is closed off. with the tops of the leg pads being shorter/smaller this means there is less mass to close off the 5-hole. he will have to slightly adjust his movements to keep that area closed off.

in a way it is similar to when the keepers started letting the underarm areas of their jerseys get oversized. the extra cut that hung down created mass, which helped take away net to shoot at. until the league years ago stepped in and said the goalies couldn't continue to have jerseys that essentially had wings on them.

the oversized jerseys and leg pads are two easy ways for goalies to take away space. while also in many cases allow them to play lazy and cover up holes in their own games, to mask their weaknesses.

this wouldn't surprise me. the way he plays from his knees, the smaller pads would make it easier for him to do what he does

Luongo isn't going to like this.

The most obvious offender of oversized goalie pads this past season was Corey Crawford. Looked like he had paddle boards stuck to his legs.

55 percent indeed.

Always reminded me of a little kid trying on his big brothers legpads. And this is a moderate picture, there are some waaaay worse ones out there, heh.

The difference in height between Crawford and Quick is one inch, Crawford being the taller goalie, yet look at the different in height with their leg pads.

Unbelievable.

I've never thought Hiller to have real big pads but at the same time it seems like his pads extend way the hell above his knees!

Goalie Pads have never looked this good. It looks like you should
shoot high on her, but I would still go 5 hole.

Goalies may have to re-discover what their stick is supposed to be used for (covering the five hole).

Was searching for the picture of Giguere next to an old school goalie of the same height and weight showing the difference in their gear... Couldn't find it. Did find this however, which was interesting and somewhat Kings related.

Yes, there used to be a photo of Patrick Roy, in his early years on Les Canadien and then later, on the AVS...Patrick looked 33% bigger.
I searched for it for about 15 minutes and gave up. The players union
(on behalf of all goalies) probably went 'NSA on it' and removed the links!

using Roy is a great example of just how much the equipment has evolved/changed. seeing pics of him in his early seasons compared to the last years, quickly shows how far the equipment evolved.

i tried grabbing shots where he is in a similar stance/pose. there is a noticeable difference between each. the first is his rookie season with the old school leather pads. the second is a few years later and the change to the next generation of pads. the final pic is from one of his last years in COL. iirc he didn't play with enormous pads, compared to others at the time. what you see though is the pads continue to grow in size, the catcher, the upper body all of it grew in coverage as the years passed.

Unbelievable.

I don't think there's as much of a difference as you're perceiving. Crawford is bent at the waist, Quick is standing straight up.

I used a very moderate pic of Crawford, though. Didn't want to look stupidly biased. Quick google search will bring you some that look like the guy is just trying to make fun of Giguere.

Also, for the purpose of covering the five hole (or anything in net, really), even an inch or two makes a world of difference. Keep in mind that Quick and Crawford are almost exactly the same size.

Crawford's certainly not the worst offender ever, though.
