Proposal: Replace one current Leaf with a Leaf from the past

I do find it odd, that so many people are defaulting two swapping out talented players, for other talented players... I mean, I'd rather swap out the bottom level players, for talent.

I'll swap Holmberg out, for Sundin in.
Domi for prime Tucker
Jarnkrok for Roberts
Laughton for Sittler
Lorentz for McDonald
Benoit for Salming

The OP said it has to be similarly talented players/similar tier players.

Domi for Tucker works though some may value domi lower/higher than Tucker.

Jarnkrok for roberts doesn't
Same with the rest, its a low end bottom of roster player for a star player

As an exercise - pretty fun:

Nieuwendyk - Gilmour - Mogilny

Knies - Sundin - Vaive

Andreychuk - Matthews - Clark

Zezel - Perrault - Nylander
Scratch that.

Putting in Rick Vaive for goodness sake.

This is obviously during the alum's tenure with the Leafs, not at their peak. Otherwise, it's a complete no brainer to swap out Mogilny for Marner, Leetch for Rielly, and Belfour for Woll/Stolarz, and

If we're talking about during their time with the Leafs and similar tiers, then I'd still go with:

- Mogilny for Marner. Even a 31 year old Mogilny would score 50+ goals in this league right now. It's a complete travesty that he's not in the HOF. He's literally better than Marner in almost every category, and I say this as a fan of Marner's. Better acceleration and edgework, equally good passing and defence, great vision and feel for the game, and better shot. The guy was an all-time great in the past 30 years and was very underrated by the time he joined the Leafs.

Unfortunate that back issues derailed the tail end of his career, but it underscores how this can become a career-altering issue very quickly as one is on the other side of 30.

Honourable mentions:

- Korolev (RIP) for Laughton. Korolev just played such a smart game. Could slot in any foward position from the second to fourth line.

- Roberts for Knies. This one is really tough because I love Knies and think he would have the same on ice impact as Roberts if you swapped them out. But can you imagine one year of intensity with Gary Roberts on this team? Just in terms of nutrition, preparation, training, playing with a physical edge, etc. If they had someone like that instead of Marleau or Thornton, who knows, maybe the kids would have grown up differently.

- Kaberle for Rielly. No-brainer

- Dave Ellett for OEL. Just having a cannon of a shot and a bit more of a physical edge as your #5-6, PP2 would have helped.

Bryan "Ass-face" McCabe for OEL then. He was a bit better defender, had a far superior shot, and was just as if not more physical.
As long as he could keep that stick from getting in between the legs of the opponents.

hahah, he was my first choice to replace OEL, but swapping him for the other McCabe would have been a fairer tier comparison.

Problem is that his corkscrew and ass checking would get called every single damn time :DD

I guess it would help if I read the instructions.

Pre Chara, absolutely.

I feel like if we swapped any of the old legends into this team, they win a cup because they had the capacity to carry a team.

Simultaneously, I feel like if we swap the current top guys into the old teams, those teams also win a cup because they weren't missing much, just a bit more talent.

I do like your domi for Tucker suggestion.

I think Tucker may be suspended out of the modern NHL though, partially for being a leaf player throwing dirty hits and partially because he had some really vicious hits that aren't legal now

Give me Tucker for anyone they cycled through the top six spot trying to find a spark. Patch, McMann, Domi, Holmburg. That one change makes it must see TV.

lol goes to show how mad everyone is when the swaps involve matthews/marner/willy more than holmberg/mcmann/robertson/jarnkrok etc for a player like sundin or gilmore.

He'd adapt... but at the end of the day, he's still a guy, who at his peak put up 28 goals, and 61 points, while playing with a lot of fire. That drive is something I'd love. All of those guys, Roberts, Corson, Sundin.. they all had that compete fire... and while ultimately they weren't good enough, they sure as hell looked like they were trying. We could use a few more guys like that.
