2 of those guys are wearing Stanley cup rings right now so, yeah, it is

And Richards and Krejci were 27 and 25 years old, respectively, when they won those Cups....not that it matters they have the rings in this putrid argument you are dragging on. Stepan is 23 years old. You sound even more irrelevant with each post.

Assuming Stastny and Marleau are both looking at nice pay checks, there really isn't anyone to step into a top 6 and be clear cut better than Stepan or Brassard. Sather is going to have to address this situation through trade, otherwise both Stepan and Brassard have to make a development jump going into next year.

If Stepan rebounds from his slump, and Brassard plays consistently like he is now and did to close out last season, then Nash, Kreider, Zuccarello, could make it work with a really strong addition to the top 6. Maybe Kristo is ready to be on a Zucc, Brassard, Kristo second line. Smurfs for sure, but following Kreider and Nash could make it less of a big deal.

Just the thought of one of those two suffering an injury and missing any significant period of time - our center depth is awful....

People love throwing around "He's not a 1c centre" - then I'd say 50% of the league doesn't have a #1C. There just isn't eough Getzlafs in the league for 30 teams. Maybe there's just too many teams, or maybe we need to redefine what a #1C is.

Stepan is on pace for 46 points. I can count the teams without a 46 point center on one hand.

I don't think any one saw him on that pace. I think most of us though he would be good for at least 55.

Even so, I would say there's 25 teams with a better than 55 point center. Stepan is very good 2C. His career averages (last year being above, this year being below) are not 1C numbers.

I wasn't aware a players peak ends at 23.We should dump Stepan now for some goon.He cant possibly rebound this year and pick up his scoring pace

Stepan for a 5th round pick and bottom 6 player, get er done Sather

you guys are a joke, enough with these ****** negative threads..

hes a solid player, having a rough time right now, but he's 23 ****en years old.. you don't just give up on a player like this.. or say hes terrible or sucks, and never will be this or that..

we lost like 3-4 games in our last 10.. everyones playing better.. no need for this bashing..

this just proves you guys are typical ranger fans, always wanting to run a player out of town, or give up on them bc their not consistently lighting the lamp.. pts don't TELL THE entire story.. we should just trade him for the next player you guys can all hate on..

I find this post very amusing when looked at next to your "i don't care, he still sucks" remarks in the Richards thread...

Meh. For me, noticeable plays are explosive plays. Stepan is the polar opposite of an explosive player. His stats got padded last year because Torts stuck him on the Left circle of the powerplay and he banged home at least 4 or 5 empty nets. The passing play of the century (I believe it was Richards to Nash to Stepan? you guys know which one I'm talking about) last year had Stepan banging it in to the empty net. That happened several times to a lesser extent. I'm not saying I won't take the goals, but someone call me when Stepan beats a defender and snipes one off the post 5 on 5. Just a terribly boring, overrated player. There are some solid UFA Center options; I'm all for trading Stepan for a nice package and signing a Stastny or Grabovski and rolling

Stastny
Brassard
Miller
Boyle/Moore

By all means, please go to my "Stepan" thread on the big board and advise what you think are fair returns.

I was hoping for a lot of feedback about what his trade return looks like, and we got a staggering good offer from a Min fan. But then those w/mancrush on Stepan jumped on me and I had to defend myself and my positions.

Thanks in advance.

I also, in name of free speech and fair play, welcome those of you who are opposed to trading Stepan to go to my 'value of' thread at the big board and comment.

But pls keep it focused on something constructive, like who you think is max return we could get, and why we are better off therefore keeping Stepan, in your opinion.

bc brads 33years old signed for another 7-8yrs and is the top5 highest paid players in this league to be our elite 1c to lead us to a cup, what has he done??and i just don't like his style of play..

stepan is 23 yrs old not even close to his prime, still learning and understanding his role and has potential and is paid at a 1/3 richards gets..

stepan shouldn't get the criticism he gets on here.. I hate seeing it.. makes ZERO sense

especially when people on these boards want the likes of Kadri or ROR and its even more funny that everyne on here looks at players by pts and theyre all in the same neighborhood..

still a top 6 center on all teams in this league (a few obv ones nto so much).. and boston's berg and krejci average 50-60pts a year and are awesome 2way centers, last time i checked they won a cup without putting up 70pts+..

I agree that IMO Stepan shouldn't get the criticism he does (he also shouldn't be expected to be a 70+ 1st liner), but surely if you can say that you don't like Richards because you just don't like his style of play then others are allowed to say the same about Stepan?

absolutely were here to argue and give our opinions..

but im i right to say everyone/a HUGE majority wanted him gone and bought out before this year? probably..

I do think hes a top 6 center, but i think for what hes done in the past and what hes expected to do, he hasn't lived up to it here..

I look at the game a lot different then most on here.. Most like the flashy, highly skill, goal scoring players and pts pts pts are how players are judged..

my ideal team to mimic is boston.. solid 2way players that are physical and in your face for 60mins, and non put up 60+ pts.. thats why i like stepans game.. bc hes more of a complete player then brad is..

if we do trade MDZ, i pray its for ROR.. or a solid 2 way centerman thats engaged.. and does it all pk pp, plays last 5mins down or up a goal and in all situations.. thats why i think sucks.. not that hes a bad player.. just value isn't there to keep him around

So is Dan Carcillo. Certainly says a lot.

The dialogue involved 1st line centers on their respective teams, two of which had won stanley cups. Each player in that discussion would be the #1 center on our team. How you got Carcillo out of that I have no idea

I will, for sure. Here's the thing we have to keep in mind; talking about Derek Stepan is akin to the president taking a side on the issue of abortion. No matter what he says, 50% of the population will be up in arms.

For the record: Stepan is an extremely useful player when he's on his game. He's been an undeniable asset for this team when he's on his game. The problem I have with him is this: the physical tools just aren't there and neither is the consistency. Every single high end forward in this league is some combination of big, fast, and strong. Stepan lacks in all 3 categories.

The only reason I would look to move him is because his value is higher than Brassard's and we could get a seriously beneficial package for him. He just made the olympic team (how.. I don't know) and he's signed to a cheap bridge deal. He's also still young.

Let's do a little experiment. I'll post a bunch of proposals in both the trade thread in HFNYR and on the main board. Here's my hypothesis (and I know it will be right because I've done it before):

Everyone on HFNYR will rip the proposals apart saying we're not getting enough
Everyone on the main board will rip the proposals apart saying they're giving up too much for Stepan and telling Ranger fans to **** off

My guess is that people are going to get seriously butt hurt when they realize fans of other teams aren't too high on Stepan

Could be....
but IF the informed consensus thinks he is worth moving, we only need 1 good enough deal.

Yes, odds a poster from any given base will come up with an exact NHL deal are slim, but much better we can come up with some basic outline of a deal.

Thanks for the added effort.

Those centers were also at different ages and times in their development, they also had completely different teammates and coaches surrounding them. So by comparing their TEAM accomplishments to Stepan's you are comparing apples to oranges. So why are you allowed to compare apples to oranges but others aren't? Your abortion comment is simply untrue and a poor analogy. MAYBE a better analogy would be making pot legal vs keeping it illegal vs making it legal for all ages. You would be in the last camp.

Your opinion goes so far in one direction that almost no side agrees with you. Assets aren't always about trading. You have made your stance clear you think he is going to stall in his development and always be a 2c who struggles with consistency and disappears for long stretches. If you, a genius high level hockey player and talent analyst, have reached this conclusion and you are correct than maybe, just maybe, other teams entire cabinet of professional scouts may have also reached this conclusion. This would thereby result in Stepan having a weak value. The team wouldn't realistically expect to get much from him if your evaluation is correct.

More likely you are jumping to a conclusion way too soon, Stepan will instead develop further, become more consistent and perform at a higher level than he has this year as his body physically matures over the next 3 years and catches up at least a little to his mind. He may also develop chemistry with his teammates too!

You're using a random and very small criteria to try to make a point. And, because this is a team sport, you fail at making a point that is at all convincing, impactful or even interesting.

So is Dwight King. Better trade for him too!

Yeah, that's totally the point I was trying to make. Doesn't change the fact that the #2 centers on half the teams in the league would be our top center. Sucks, but recognize it because it's fact

Sorry. I'll try harder to interest you next time

I think youll find based on his poor skating ability, many teams/fans will not value Stepan as a no.2 center. I don't get to see many games from around the league, but id imagine there isn't one team with a top 6 center who is a poor a skater as Stepan.
