Remember Hockey Digest?

Does anyone know when the last issue rolled off the presses? I have a copy of the August, 2004, issue with Martin St. Louis on the cover. Will hang on to it if it happens to bethe final issue but it'll hit the recycling bin if it ain't.

I remember that mag. It was never that good. It had some interesting features, but overall it was geared more towards americans and seemed somewhat simplistic in many ways.

Also, THN sucks now. I had every single issue from 1996 until 2002 and bought them sparsely from then until about 04. These days I barely even bother. Anyone else feel like the quality of it dropped exponentially right around the time that they went for the magazine look/feel instead of their old newspaper look/feel? Even hockey pool forecasters have been getting lamer lately. Why is all hockey literature getting worse? I ask you, why?
/rant.

Great shame about THN. I read it every week from around 1969 until my subscription expired back in the early 2000's. It became about analysis and "glue guys" instead of inside stories on players, coaches, GM's, Teams, etc. It used to cover the minor leagues and junior, and provide scoring stats.

It went from get home - get THN, and read it through, to "Oh, more bland and vanilla stuff." After 25 years of subscribing I finally did not renew, and haven't missed it (in it's current form) at all.

I do like their draft preview and future look still though.

There were 2 more issues. Oct & Dec of 2004, Last issue was Dec 2004.

Two things stick out in my memory about this magazine.
- Their head to head player comparisons were always razor-thin close once the added up all the arbitrary points they allocated for each individual skill. They had Jim Campbell and Jarome Iginla dead even in one issue, which is funny today, but what really drove it home was the issue where Mario Lemieux edged out Sergei Fedorov by a single point.
- They carried a massive torch for Bill Ranford, and were calling him the best goaltender in the game as late as 1996.

Iginla actually won that 83-81 but a lot closer than one would think. Feb 1998 issue.

I definitely remember the 'Hockey Digest' magazine. When I was much younger I always looked forward to the next issue and would ride my bicycle to the nearest 7-Eleven or pharmacy to look for a copy in the newsstand section of the store. I didn't always buy them but I did collect some issues over the years like the one below.

what's preventing you from sharing all these?

I’ve tried over the years, doesn’t sound like it will happen unfortunately, but Tim absolutely has that right. He’s not obligated to share or sell since it is indeed his own collection.

I believe he has the Hockey Digest, Hockey Illustrated, Hockey Pictorial, Hockey World etc.. runs in their entirety. Those would feature a goldmine of great historical articles. Hopefully one day they can become readily available as archives. I’d happily pay for that.

I really didn't/don't want to derail this thread but since Habsfan touched on it a little bit (which is absolutely fine for him to do) I will respond. If nothing else I will edit my thread later.

Technically there is nothing preventing me from sharing.

Realistically lots of things.

1. I don't sell them; if I did nobody would be willing to pay the price I would ask.
2. I don't just give them away. Unless someone has done something like this they have no idea the amount of time that is invested. Figure on average about 1 hour per magazine. Multiply that for just the actual scanning work. The consider the time & effort spent on accumulating the issues and verifying you have all issues printed.
3. Once a copy is out there what prevents someone else from trying to profit and or making available for the masses. Absolutely nothing.

The end goal was to have them available for people to research, enjoyment, etc.... A couple things that would need to be done for me to agree to that.

1. Someone would need to host the online. I don't have the expertise nor do I want to spend the time or money doing so.
2. Potential copyright issues. Again, I don't have the expertise nor do I want to spend time or money on that.
3. The issues would need to be protected so a mass download could not be done.

A perfect home for the archives would either be SIHR who wants nothing to do with them because of the above; especially #2. Of course they are still trying to work out the THN archives so even if they did when would they ever be available. The other place would be the HHOF Resource Center. They want copies but they would only be viewed in house. To me that takes away the real purpose of making them available where they could be accessed from anywhere in the world. I also would not have confidence that they would be protected. Nothing against them but they don;t have the resources for that.

So, if you have any suggestions or possible ideas how to get this done I am all ears or since we are on a forum I guess eyes.

I am also interested in trading for stuff I don't already have accumulated so I am open to that.

Here is a sampling of the items I have archived. This list has not been updated in about 9 months so quite a bit has been added.

More than happy to discuss further. Just not sure this thread is the place for a longer conversation so I apologize if this either annoyed or bored anyone else.

Who owned Hockey Digest? Was Stan Fischler the editor in chief?
Century publishing. Same company that did Baseball, Basketball & Football digest.

They had several different Editor's in Chief during their run. I don't think Fischler was one of them.

Start a new thread. The Hockey Digest thread does not need to be hijacked.

Really no need for that.... Not sure exactly what your concern is STL.... talking copyright here? I'm not a Lawyer but we deal with this sort of thing on the Business Board fairly frequently.... have access to legal opinions.... happy to help out if I can & get a couple of our Legal Beagles to opine on the matter.

What is the title of this thread?

Is what the discussion has turned to in regards to Hockey Digest and the purpose of this thread?

A reasonable person would say....NO

No worries then, no pressure. Youve stated your reasons here & thats the end of it..... Next? :)

I really liked that magazine and had subscribed to it for a few years. But this is comical about Soupy Campbell being closely compared to Iginla. Oh my goodness that is sad.............

If you take a look at the date & where they were in their careers when the comparison was done it's really not as bad as it looks.

The only things Campbell was rated above Iginla was scoring (Campbell did have more Goals up to that point) & skating.
