Zero? Really?

Might want to check the numbers. I agree with your other points, and it's not because I don't like the guys, but someone's gotta go. Our D is getting expensive considering how many of them can fill the second-pairing role, and though I agree a forward would be first to go (cough, Stoll), the money just doesn't work out after this season.

Again, I'm not suggesting I WANT to move any of these guys in particular, but it's literally just a math thing. Go fool around with capgeek for our team going into next year. It's a fun logic puzzle and a good way to drive yourself crazy for an hour or two :P

How about absolute zero then. Not happening.

Panic trading a good forward for a d-man would be a disaster of a move. What happens to this new guy when Voynov and A-Mart come back?

No way Lombardi makes any move until the Voynov situation is resolved.

So what you're saying is next year's defense will be Doughty-Muzzin/Regehr-Voynov/Martinez-McNabb/Greene. I disagree. But ok.

Our current defense costs 19.4 million. Next year, Muzzin's 4 million a year kicks in. Regehr was making 3--what does he get next year? What does Martinez get? Let's say, conservatively, Regehr gets 2 and Martinez gets 2.5. You're looking at a defense that costs 22.8 million. Realistically, it could be more like 24-25 million.

Our current forwards cost 42.7 million. Our forwards for next year that are signed--Kopitar, Richards, Brown, Carter, Gaborik, King, and Lewis--cost 32 million. That's before signing Toffoli, Pearson, Williams, Stoll, Clifford, Andreoff, Nolan or whatever AHLers take their place. We have 10 million remaining to sign 5-7 forwards and RFA Martin Jones if you go by this year's cap, probably a bit more for next year's. I forget what the latest reports say but if you assume 4-5 million increase we're fine--just keep in mind Kopi the following year and so on.

When the question becomes "what do you do," like I said, I tend to agree it's the forwards corps that gets reshaped--but to talk about the defense like it's set in stone and untouchable is just wrong. Mitchell moved on to continue getting an important role--I imagine Martinez will want some sort of compromise (money/time) as well, and if he gets it, that means someone else gets the short end. Who knows what Regehr is thinking. Everyone else, we own for now, so oh well :P

I Agree with ones who feel that once Voynov and Martinez return, things will straighten themselves out. Just no reason to even consider any trades at the present.

When Martinez gets back Doughty's minutes will go down.

Muzzin - Doughty

Regehr - Martinez

McNabb - Greene

Get Voynov back at some point, and we likely lose McBain.

Muzzin - Doughty

Voynov - Regehr

Martinez - Greene

are the likely pairings. I think Regehr drags his partner down, but I don't see Sutter sitting him in favor of McNabb.

No rash decisions will be made until the Voynov issue is resolved. He could be playing this week for all we know. Let's just let it play out.

Agreed 100%.

And I think Drew is more than capable of playing the minutes, plenty of other superstar defenders played half the game for a good chunk of their career.

Like I said Suter/Weber play heavy minutes all year long. They are fine game in, and game out.
