Too bad for Kazakhstan, they were in full control until a shit call and then never mentally recovered

My heart. Sorry for Khazakstan though. We were lucky and somewhat opportunistic but eventually recovered.

Unfortunate to see Kazakhstan getting relegated. At least they played well in their game against Slovakia and in the relegation game against Germany today. Congratulations to Germany in their victory to stay in the top group for next year's World Juniors in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Kazakhstan coach is a Soviet dinosaur that's for sure. Every little success Kazakhstan enjoyed in this tournament was solely down to players making something happen individually.

You can see he is stuck in the 80's. Both times in the tourney with a goalie out situation he waited until 40 seconds left to pull the goaltender. Modern teams do it at the 2 minute mark at minimum.

KZ coach might be a dinosaur and the team may have deficiencies but those kids played their hearts out the last 3 games and would likely have remained in the top division with fair refereeing.
This. It doesn't take a genius to realise that Germany getting relegated would be a catastrophe for the IIHF and when Kaz went up by 2 I said that they were going to get a penalty instantly... which they did, two in fact. Result: 2 PP goals and then another PP goal later just for good measure to seal the deal. A lot of these calls were pathetic (not the last one though) as well but you just know that the minnow teams will get screwed by the refs every single time. Oh look! Latvia just had a two man disadvantage against Sweden. Of course they did...

Refereeing was fine.

Goalie needs to stop some pucks, defense has to be able to get out of their zone without a constant heart attack or turnover, coach has to coach, etc.

Plenty of positives to take away from this tournament and '05 generation as such. Lyapunov should be the next Mikhailis, Gross was a big surprise and he should become a decent pro in near future, Kim has a lot of skill to his game, Sarkenov is a loose cannon, but could become a good power forward.

Every '05 born D-man was a disappointment to be fair, but Orazov should become a pro player for sure.

Germany was down 3-1 getting outshot 20-10 when the refs materialized a 'holding' call out a German giveaway at their own blue line and then called KZ for boarding ~10 seconds later. 3-3.

A disgraceful, unwarranted intervention that Germany had done nothing to deserve.

I'm the only Kazakhstan fan here and I can assure you, those were totally ok calls. Clear hook to midriff with clear boarding following seconds after.

I didn't see the first call. I did see the second though.. again, coaching from the 90's on, players are taught not to engage in heavy body contact on the PK unless it is right down near the net. So throwing a body check into the numbers with the player two feet from the boards was plain stupid. All he needed to do was get a stick in and then use his body for leverage. Modern coaching is badly needed for the Kazahks.

I mean, that was peak clutch & grab hockey. You can't expect to get away with it these days.

Refs had called nothing up to that point. I would be going nuts if the refs came from hibernation to knock Canada out with that kind of 'holding call' in a tight game.

Didn't see the game, so no comment on whether any of the calls were justified or not, but this particular statement is complete nonsense. Teams don't need to work for penalties, nor would there ever be a case of a team "deserving" to get penalties called their way. There is exactly one thing and one thing only that (should) define whether a penalty will be called, and that's whether there was an infraction or not.

You do not get a benefit in regard to penalties for playing well or working hard, nor would it somehow be okay to not give teams powerplays just because they aren't playing as well as they should. Any ref who bases his calls on the current score or overall team performance is failing to do his job properly. And yes, that obviously includes the utterly stupid "game management" that has hurt this game for ages.

Not specifically related to your response, and not trying to imply any politics as I don't know enough about Kazakhstan anyways but...

With the ongoing situation in Russia, do you think Team Kazakhstan has considered "incorporating" Russian national team coaches to help their own program while Russia is not able to compete? I don't think they could do that for Russian players but maybe coaches?

If a team is driving play, physically dominating, or creating chances in the opposition zone, generating situations where infractions or near infractions were occurring one could forgive a borderline call or a flat out bad call against the team chasing the play.

Germany was doing none of that, and the refs had called nothing all game. When you are doing nothing and get gifted a powerplay for a non-infraction you certainly didn't deserve it.
