I missed the final 5 minutes of the game, but shortly after learned of Reilly Smith's last second goal - so I went back and watched the replay of the final minute. So I am looking for Reilly in the final 30 seconds...15 seconds....10 seconds and he is not even on the ice .....WTF, I'm thinking....did I hear the wrong guy ?

And then I see him pop on the ice with less than 8 seconds left in what was a clearly an illegal (on-the-fly) change that was game changing and possibly series changing. Here is the evidence....
Reilly Smith Change.jpg

As you can see, Reilly has both skates on the ice, and Roy is easily over 15 FT from the boards (the center of the face-off dot is 20.5 FT from the boards). Whereas, the NHL rulebook states that the player coming off must be within 10 FT of the bench.

The only other Knight coming close to the bench is Pietrangelo. So check out this photo of Pietrangelo leaving the ice.......

Pietrangelo Change.jpg

Pietrangelo is the skater coasting behind the linesman. And his replacement has just stepped on the ice. At this time, Pietrangelo is probably 10 to 12 FT from the bench, but as you can see, by this time, Reilly Smith is so far onto the ice that he has already crossed the Rogers logo. So even if one wanted to argue that Smith was replacing Pietrangelo, that falls apart because back at the time at which Smith first put both skates on the ice, Pietrangelo was easily 15 FT (+) from the bench. And I'm sure other view(s) would prove that.

Either way, Reilly Smith knew exactly what he was doing (cheating) by jumping on the ice early....and the Oilers got royally screwed !

This "Cheat" is the only way Reilly could have pulled that off.

Meh, at best it’s borderline too many men. Missed calls happen. I’m more concerned with the fact that through 9 games the Oilers haven’t had more PPs than the other team a single time.

Happens a dozen times a game. Problem is the entire team including Skinner thought the period was over and then Skinner decided to do his pregame warm up routine and called that “challenging the shooter”.

Going to the visualizer made me go back to see how that puck got to Smith in the first place. Looking at the video, I'm wondering if Skinner deflected the puck into the air which allowed it to get through Nurse and McDavid to Smith. Skinner may have made two mistakes on that play. Ultimately though, just terrible awareness by everyone on ice. Karlsson is 1 on 4 and not only wins the battle but gets the puck to an open man coming in that no one even considers picking up.

If the refs called the slash on Mcdavid that knocked his stick out of his hands around 1:30 left to play then this goal doesn't happen either. Maybe Edmonton scores a PP goal, maybe Vegas scores a shorty, maybe it goes to OT but the one thing that is certain is that Skinner would have allowed the winning goal at some point in OT if Edmonton didn't get a quick one.

He absolutely got a piece of it and tipped it into the slot.

The missed slash of McDavids stick in half is imo much more compelling that's typically automatic.

This kind of change happens 10x a game.

But I mean... If we don't have mustache giving out free goals we win in regulation. So.

If Mc-D and Drai play to the level that they are capable of then none of these things matter.

They have to be better tonight and I expect that they will be.

Speaking of line changes, we were beyond awful at them last game. Id say it was the initiator on 2 ga. Wasn't even the last goal right after a line change? With 10 seconds left wtf

@3rd Line thanks for taking the time to break down that line change. Some people are giving you grief for it but I like when people observe something others didn’t and take the time to show the work.

Even though it likely wouldn’t have been called in real time, it’d be nice for coach’s to have one challenge on a missed call that the on-ice officials don’t review, it’d be an off-ice one, like on the McDavid slash. That’s all you get is one per game, if you lose delay of game, if you win, power play.

The problem with that is if you can review a play like this and get a penalty called, the refs have to be calling it all the time and then you've got 15 too many men calls per game.

That was a normal line change in today's game.

I get what you're saying, but this type of change could legit be called 10+ times a game.

Which is part of the reason that I find too many men on the ice calls to generally be ridiculous.

That stick slash didn't get mentioned much on our site, but that is a blatant obvious penalty 100 out of 101 times. The one exception being in the last 2 minutes of a tied playoff game and Vegas being the perpetrator.
