I mean, what is location, really
So why would Yzerman help take Reilly Smith off their hands? Only to retain and flip him to another team makes no sense. Vegas would need to add a sweetener as well as the team who would acquire Smith.
Yzerman would help in exchange for a draft pick. He would then retain and trade Smith for another draft pick. Two draft picks for retaining 2.5 mil.

So he deals future considerations (that guy... again!) for Smith and say the Vegas 4th round pick in 2023 and then he retains salary on Smith. Smith is then dealt on to another team for some sort of rental package like say to the Bruins for a 2nd and a prospect. Detroit comes out with three assets for paying for a percentage of Smith until the end of the season.

Would Yzerman be interested in cornering the market on Smith’s?

Steven already has the brothers Giovanni and Gemel Smith, so acquiring Reilly would add to the Smith stockpile, then maybe he could acquire Craig Smith from Boston, Ty Smith from NJ, Mike Smith from Edmonton, Brenden Smith and C.J. Smith from Carolina and Cole Smith from Nashville.

lol Vegas isn't paying a team to take Smith
For an expiring UFA on a 5 million dollar contract that they're unwilling to retain on? I think they are. There's no contender who's going to look at that and say, "I have 5 million dollars to spend, Duckworth, fetch me my rolodex! I must acquire pending UFA Reilly Smith!"

But even so, Yzerman could trade a 3rd for Smith and get a 2nd+ on the retention trade, so it wouldn't be the end of the world. It would still be a net gain.

I doubt Vegas trades Smith to a team that could flip him to another team they might face in their own division or conference. They should flip him to an Eastern conference team and preferably one they won't face in the finals. Rangers make way too much sense as they can take his whole salary and aren't a cup favorite.

Now? You want pieces for now? For this Detroit Red Wings team? I don't even know how to respond to that, so I just won't.
This teams a lot better then you think, Do we still have a ways to go of course. But in 47 games played we're at 46 points the exact same number as last season in 56 games played. Team is basically on a 79-81 point season putting us in the 12-14 overall range pick wise. Just to keep acquiring picks that might or might not work out is asinine.

I don't see a playoff team in Vegas paying to get rid of a guy who is playing pretty well, and is UFA in 5 months from now. Also, Eichel could easily be out until at least the playoffs, at which point cap is no longer a concern.

Yep. We will take any and all Smith's. Maybe they will even bring back Barry Smith to be asst. coach.

DRW is not making the playoffs this year. Smith is an expiring UFA. Why not pick up a couple of free picks? Hell, they can even trade the picks obtained for roster players.

Detroit has 2 retention slots left, one of which is likely dedicated for Leddy. Who are all the other candidates for the last slot?
If there's a market for him and that's a big if, The last retention spot would probably go to Thomas Greiss. But unless there's tons more injuries in the net. I seriously doubt there's a market for Greiss even though he'd be the cheapest to acquire pick wise.
