That team is a mess with no hope of contention in the foreseeable future. I can see Sharks and Ducks getting some success sooner
Maybe so but there's a city lifestyle that Chicago is known to offer that San Jose doesn't for a hockey player. Also, better take home pay.
Buffalo has been the worst team of the last 14 years by a mile. They have set the record for an NHL playoff drought.

Sharks have only been bad for what, 6 years?
Something like that but when San Jose is bad, they don't have many alluring features. They are on par with Buffalo in terms of what they offer a hockey player when they're relatively similar in competitiveness. Yes, San Jose has the nice weather but it takes more of your money while both aren't LA or Anaheim in terms of appealing local amenities.

You know, we all talk about taxes in Canada being a negative, but if we’re playing that card, should we not consider that if you are paid in USD while living in Canada your spending power is up like 43% due to the exchange rate? I’ll tell ya, I’ve been to the USD a lot, and things don’t cost 43% more here, so there’s definitely a benefit there.

Housing price difference is enough that all the other savings don’t make up for it. A million in Texas gets you two McMansions, in Canada it’s 6 months rent in the basement of a crackhouse (with roommates)

This is a garbage article. It's just reposting people's a garbage tweets. EF says Smith is likely to be traded to an American team. The only credible thing that isn't even cited in the article. Bozo says "likely he has Canadian teams on NYC list" and bigger bozo writes a story as if that is now a fact.

Maybe on American teams have had trade talks for him. These sites should not be considered as credible links and be removed IMO.

Honestly same, I love Canada but it'd be far more likely if I was a star athlete I'd have a 2nd home in Canada near my Parents/Family but between taxes and weather id rather pick:

Nevada/Texas/Florida etc. Low taxes better weather is a killer combo.
Lowest temperature in Las Vegas in 2024 was 31 degrees and the warmest was 120 degrees. That's 0 degrees to 49 degrees for you Canadians. I'd hate living in Vegas.

For comparison, in Toronto is was 3 degrees as the coldest and 91 as the warmest. That's -16 degrees to 33 degrees.

To each their own though. Reminder that your offseason is during the summer so in Toronto you'd be looking at an average of 75-80 degrees while in Vegas you're at 105-110 for three months. No thank you.

I’d rather not have a person who doesn’t want to play here.

I don’t understand why people take that stance, but it’s their choice if they’re given the right.
I don't understand why fans want players who don't actively want to be with their team. One of reasons why NHL franchises are homogeneous and have no individual flair/team culture is because very few players have organic affinity for their organization.

Make free agency more open. Scrap the draft. Reform the salary cap.

We should have a more European style system where players go where they want, and teams have the flexibility to pursue the blueprint they want.

How cool would it be for Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton, Boston, and the Rangers to be filled with hometown boys? Wouldn't it be a great story for the Panthers and Lightning to hold onto the longshot guys who turned cesspool franchises into top class? Why shouldn't Vegas and Carolina be allowed to take a cold, transactional, mercenary approach?

The only teams that should be afraid are the ones who have absolutely nothing to offer players--in which case, they should either figure it out or fold.

this has been happening more in recent years because of the pandemic / how it was handled on either side of the border.

Do not make this about who was/is right or wrong…i dont care and im not saying anything speaking to that. Im just pointing out the uncomfortable truth that gets ignored. Pre covid, sure some players didnt want to go to the colder, smaller cities - but never all of mtl/tor/van.

Dry heat vs Humid isn't really comparable though same with dry bs damp cold.

Also the hottest days in Vegas/Texas would be the offseason where I would be home in Northern Ontario anyways hence the 2nd home near family.

Odds are id have not too much time over 110 given the summer months are offseason

Oh yeah, I much prefer the 45C heat in Vegas over a 25C day here. Also doesn't help the UV being so intense down here.

I think that would be cool, but realistically only for desirable franchises. Whether that is geographical, marketability, etc. is up to each individual.

It’s a majorly fun idea, but would hurt the business of hockey entertainment.

Another option/ addition to your idea is the inclusion of a relegation system within the leagues.

NHL A

NHL B

AHL/ NHL C

3 separate championships where players and teams can move up or down based on performance.

A new take on this:

NHL A&B teams play each other. B league teams who beat A league teams would get 3 points for a win.

Teams initially ranking is based off of previous regular season and playoff performance. Throughout the year, a team can get relegated or promoted to A or B.

NHL A teams who beat B League get 1.5 points.

(2 points for beating a team in the same skill rating)

2 separate playoffs in which each league has a trophy.

Playoffs A is first, and teams who lose the 1st round get to compete for league B trophy.

After the season, you could have trophies like “biggest improvement”, and other similar ones.

I know this is super far fetched, but it could generate some interest and meaning to all games played.

It feels like you negotiate an 8 team no trade list just to put all of Canada and Buffalo on it. You can live with anything else.

News flash, that is majority of the league and 99% of non-Canadian players. Economics, politics, how they handled the lockdowns, losing teams, tax exempt states, weather, soooo many reasons to choose literally anywhere else.

Known game breaker, Reilly Smith.
