Wait a sec so they could have had Fabbro?

They could have. It would have necessitated going into LTIR which the Oilers don’t seem to want to do. Seems like they don’t want to be in a position where they are forced to need to make a move when Kane is ready to return. Not saying that is the right move or not.

So basically they've had such a stick up their ass about accruing cap space that they effectively passed on matching Broberg/Holloway and claiming Fabbro to have dat magical cap room. What exactly do they think they're going to do at the trade deadline?

Watch goals 3 and 4 both BY Konecny from last game Philly at CBJs. One a lazy play behind the net. The second a bad read on coming back on a developing play...admittidly the play did finish from the other side of the ice but the original sin is there.
Fabbro is a little more two way than i would personally want in the position and sometimes it can cause him to be more out of position than i would like. But i can see how that leads to exciting hockey...more scoring plays and he is good at transition. Trotz probably looking to establish a hard to play against defense first game.
NOT saying Fabbro couldn't have been a quality pickup ...even really to catch and sell ....so many teams looking for a top 4 RD now...Vancouver, Montreal both desperate, Ottawa, NYRs becoming desperate; it was an easy mistake to make by a GM and the pro scouts having seen his talent and then his culpability and some of his laziness.
Lets hope Regula can play high end defense and decent transition. Hopefully better transition than Emberson and more confidence. Even this would strengthen our team. After he learns the system maybe slowly Regula can start activating a bit. He did eventually learn this in junior ...maybe he is just slow to the party here too. I knew a guy Bantam/midget that was sort of like that.

This is a fun gamble. Some Bruins fans are bummed about losing him

He had a bad injury and lost important development time. That's not good, but that's the only way we were able to snap him up for free

As our #7D mid season, with lots of time until the deadline, we have the perfect opportunity to see what the kid can do in practices, and even some playing time if he looks good.

Gambling on high ceiling talent is what we need to do. We will need young core players to emerge. Keep trying guys

I don't mind it. Fact is we're not going to have a lot of picks in the years going forward because many of them will be dealt at the deadline and in the summer (to move cap out).

I would've taken a swing on Alex Nylander too if for no other reason than to give Savoie and Philp more skill to play with in the AHL.

Yeah, Stauff mentioned exactly that tonight in the 2nd intermission. He'll get a few games to get up to speed, then we see what we got.
The possible injury to Bouchard could make things interesting. @Fourier would Regula's contract count against the cap if he's sent down on a conditioning stint?

If Regula has been out with an injury I wonder if he'd be open to a conditioning stint in Bako?

He is still injured. He spent all of last year in the AHL, so it is not like he is a proven nhler

He is on a two way contract

A two way deal means nothing in this context.

A big problem is that Fabbro was not a sure thing. It's easy for a team with space and no expectations to take him and see what he could do. Columbus ate all of the 2.5 aav cap hit.

Fabbro was not traded. He was waived. That means a lot of teams weren't interested in taking him for free. Every team could have had him for a crappy pick like how we picked up Pudkolzin for a 4th.

At the deadline we will be going after a D who is more of a sure thing. That means it will be expensive but less of a risk. Oddly that might mean we trade for impending UFA Fabbro. Columbus did teams like ours a favor by letting Fabbro prove himself. The assets they'd gain is their reward for taking all the risk
