Refs rob us all by stopping a goalie fight

Fighting is illegal in the NHL and the only reason linesmen don't step in right away is they might worsen the situation for themselves or the 2 fighters. It's different here considering both goalies wasted too much time preparing to fight, giving the linesmen the time and justification to stop it. If you're going to have a goalie fight, you need to start running at each other.

Not buying it. You don’t see the officials going out of their way to prevent other infractions from occurring.

Don't know if it's the reason but you are not allowed to take off the helmet when fighting. And you pretty sure do not want to box a goalie mask.

So my guess would be they stop it, because removing your helmet for the fight is illegal.

Still sucks even though I am not a fan of fighting.

Give me another example where the players were on the other sides of the rink from each other and took 10 seconds to prepare?

Linesmen come running when a 3rd player enters a fight.

The Refs are told to not allow it to happen after recent events like the Emery fight. Also if the goalie leaves the crease to fight they get a penalty.

Didn’t Kuemper just have a catastrophic eye injury like 3 years ago? Seems like you would try to avoid those if you’re a goalie. The refs did him and the Kings a favor.

If it was Pheonix Copley out there, by all means go crazy.

Baseball players have batting helmets, they should keep a skater's helmet on top of the goal next to their bottle so they can safely scrap with the other goalie.

If think goalies are getting CTE from one fight, instead of from their full-time job of getting dinged in the head by hockey pucks, I don’t know what to tell them.

didn't some study come out recently that states that hockey players were just as likely to get CTE from taking and receiving hits over the course of their career than from fighting?

Yep. I think this is a big part of the seeming mantra to stop any goalie fight. I really hate this rule for skaters, too. Why would you want players to punch each others helmets and visors? Most fights now make me cringe while they wail their knuckles into plastic.

Also, I think the goalie equipment makes an injury during a fight more likely than just an average fight. Mike DiPietro got hurt back in the day (yes, he was always injury prone) fighting Brent Johnson (i had to look it up) and that seems to be around when goalie fights started to disappear.

Not CTE, but I did some research once on the source of concussions players were getting from hockey, and only something like 5% of them were the direct result of getting into a fight. Unfortunately I don't have a link for that, since that was years ago, and surprisingly, I actually remembered.

Might be a helmet thing, officials almost always try to stop fights before they happen when guys take off the helmet before a fight . Let alone a goalie mask which is automatically coming off. You used to see buckets off all the time, but I think there's a mandate now on top of the extra 2 min penalty.Makes no sense otherwise that they'll let players square off left and right but not the most padded players on the ice.

Definitely a helmet thing. In both the Kuemper and Copley videos they don't grab anyone until their helmet comes off.
