Referee misses call and both Brad Marchand and Jack Edwards go nuts

Acted like a petulant child when something didn’t go his way and got put on the naughty step. All is good.
It's good so see some passion in players from time to time. It often means they care about winning or losing. Some so called elite players could use that kind of passion ... Leafs?

Also, funny enough, the whole thing kind of more-so shows favouritism for Boston.

That kind of play going uncalled is a regular Tuesday for some teams, and the fact that the lack of call drew that kind of reaction just kind of says that they get that call most of the time. No fines have been handed out, they didn't give Marchand the usual 10 minute misconduct for the tantrum, which let him stay in the game and score a goal on a make-up call, and the unsportsmanlike was the only penalty they called all game on Boston.

The way he lost his shit before going to the box yapping at the ref, then while in the box has gotten guys 10's plenty of time. Saw Doughty get an extra 10 while in the box just by calling the ref an f-ing joke.

Here is the rule:

Rule 75 – Unsportsmanlike Conduct
75.4 Misconduct Penalty
- Misconduct penalties shall be assessed under this rule for the following infractions:
(i) Any player who persists in using obscene, profane or abusive language directed towards any person after being assessed a minor or bench minor penalty under this rule.
(ii) Any player who deliberately throws any equipment out of the playing area. At the discretion of the Referee, a game misconduct may be imposed.
(iii) Any player who persists in any course of conduct (including threatening or abusive language or gestures or similar actions) designed to incite an opponent into incurring a penalty.
(iv) When a penalized player challenges or disputes the ruling of an official after he has already entered the penalty bench and play has resumed.
(v) In general, participants displaying this type of behavior are assessed a minor penalty, then a misconduct penalty and then a game misconduct penalty if they persist.

So yes, situations where a player is already in the box with a penalty can result in 10. If he’s just skating around or sitting on the bench, it’s a 2 minute minor. There is parallel language in the Abuse of Official category.

Mind you, I think it’s a stupid rule and the refs should have leeway to use 10 minute misconducts at will. But that’s not the rule.

Something that upsets both clowns Marchand and Edwards? you hate to see it.

Yes it looked like a trip but honestly not as egregious of a missed call as I was expecting. Marchand is hopping out of the way as the trip happens so real time I can see how they overlook what looks like some contact with the feet and stick.

Also given the player involved I'm sure the refs aren't exactly going to give Marchand the benefit of the doubt. If this happens with Bergeron it's likely a different story.

With Edwards it's not surprising but I'm not sure why Marchand was soooo outraged about the non-call. Doesn't like sleeping in the bed he made I guess.

I could care less about Marchand not getting the call he wanted, but it is really a sad state of affairs when the so-called "professional" referees in today's NHL dole out penalties with spite and petulance like in this case. He highlighted their poor performance and so they called a penalty on him.

It happens far too much - a team compains about an outrageous non-call (not a relatively small one like this) and rather than have a professional conversation and acknowledge their failure, the ref doubles down and continues to penalize the aggrieved team to "show them who's boss".

This is why refereeing in the NHL is becoming more and more controversial. Lack of consistency, lack of accountability - including some public accountability, and just an air of pettiness as to how they go about doing their jobs.

Missed call

Marchand earned the 2 for the temper tantrum

Jack Edwards is Jack Edwards. Love it or hate it. It’s nothing new so I’m not sure why it’s a surprise.

You can’t disrespect officials like that during play in any sport, at any age. Sportsmanship is a thing. If there’s an issue with the officiating you handle it privately

I get it from Marchand's point of view. I'd be mad. I also get it from the refs perspective. Marchand is coming in and cuts the other way. Skates come together and he goes down. A ref watching that happen fast might give the player the benefit of an accidental trip caused by Marchand's suddenly changing directions. If i'm tripped, I want that call. If I'm the defending player, I'm furious at that call.

I think the ref could have let the unsportsmanlike conduct go.

Lol that's a trend with that team and was a big factor in the Blues knocking them out of the Cup finals, I think it was game 5 in Boston where the Blues won by 1 and scored a goal late after a missed call resulted in the Bruins deciding to stop playing to cry.
Everyone knows you need to complain to the media after the game to get what you want.

I'm a Bruins fan and I hate everything about Edwards. But I have to admit I get a chuckle when I see other fanbases go batshit crazy over something stupid he said.

I used to agree strongly with that until I saw the petty and petulant behaviour start to become routine with NHL referees. They have an issue and they need to address it. The public needs to see some accountability and calls need to be made and seen to be made consistently.

Again - missed call couldn't have heppened to a more appropriate guy, but there's a bigger issue.

Someone needs to direct me to part of the clip where Edwards goes nuts?

I'll be sharpening my pitchfork and confirming my 'Jack Edwards is the worst' club membership dues are up to date and paid.

They're always crying about something.

i know, just look at this thread.......

its been discussed multiple times how Marchands past behaviour will affect him going forward, Him not getting a call is not surprising.
Marchand often draws uncalled penalties for that reason (understandable at times if it may be embellishment) but that has absolutely zero impact on such a clear penalty on a puck carrier here if the official has integrity.

That official needs discipline for this.

When you dive a lot you might not get the borderline ones....
Absolutely.

This was not borderline. Not remotely.
