So, I'm a little sick of all the redo the draft threads on here where they're so recent that not enough has changed for much to actually change. So here's my attempt to change that. Redraft the 1996 draft. Why 1996? Because we have a full gauge on how the players turned out, and since they are all eligible for UFA next year (unless they're still under contract or sign an extension, of course) we can evaluate their drafted careers and how much value picking them was worth. Keep in mind, this isn't necessarily about who is the best today, but who played the best over the years before a team who drafted them lost the primary advantages afforded by drafting a player.

Here is my first round:

original draft position / originally drafted by / player
56 NY Islanders Zdeno Chara
9 Anaheim Ruslan Salei
24 Phoenix Daniel Briere
21 San Jose Marco Sturm
27 Buffalo Cory Sarich
204 Toronto Tomas Kaberle
179 Tampa Bay Pavel Kubina
1 Ottawa Chris Phillips
239 Ottawa Sami Salo
199 New Jersey Willie Mitchell
3 NY Islanders J.P. Dumont
13 Calgary Derek Morris
79 Colorado Mark Parrish
89 Calgary Toni Lydman
49 New Jersey Colin White
15 Philadelphia Dainius Zubrus
20 Florida Marcus Nilson
35 Anaheim Matt Cullen
40 Calgary Steve Begin
43 Washington Jan Bulis
139 Phoenix Robert Esche
44 Mtl. Canadiens Mathieu Garon
136 Ottawa Andreas Dackell
167 Colorado Dan Hinote
176 Colorado Samuel Pahlsson
71 Mtl. Canadiens Arron Asham
70 Dallas Jonathan Sim
174 Phoenix Trevor Letowski
96 Los Angeles Eric Belanger
5 Dallas Richard Jackman

What does yours look like?

Salei and Sarich are much too high. Kubina, Kaberle, Phillips, Salo, Sturm are better for sure.

Meh, I might just be biased as I tend to prefer defensive defensemen like them. But in Salei's case, I just felt he was better for longer. In Sarich's case, I saw him as very crucial to Tampa's cup, though perhaps I gave that too much credit.

Salei 2nd overall? I wouldn't want to be making that decision if I was GM. Far too many other players that are better and ranked lower on your list.

Chara
Briere
Sturm
Garon
Salo
Kaberle
Phillips
Dumont
Kubina
Morris
Salei
Parrish
Lydman
Mitchell
Esche
Cullen
Bulis
Nilson
Zubrus
Pisani
Sarich
Rozsival
White
Reasoner
Kvasha
Belanger
Begin
Asham
Pahlsson
Zyuzin
Poti
Jackman
Willsie
Hinote
Letowski

A sorry lot for sure. I could only muster a top 15. Some decent defencemen at least.

Zdeno Chara
Tomas Kaberle
Derek Morris
Robert Esche
Chris Phillips
Daniel Briere
Marco Sturm
Sami Salo
Cory Sarich
Pavel Kubina
J.P. Dumont
Mark Parrish
Tom Poti
Ruslan Salei
Willie Mitchell

Fair enough, and I don't disagree. But my list wasn't based on who is the best player, but rather whose given the most between draft day and now. The value of the draft pick, so to speak. He may never have been the best, but he made the NHL quickly and has been a useful player for a long time. That's largely what bumped him up so high in my book. His work in helping Anaheim get within a game of the cup also gave him a little extra push.

Garon and Salo, for example, would've been a lot higher if I was just doing who the best player today was. But I'm looking at it more as who theoretically would've given their draft team the most value. I did however not factor in trade value, which could skew things.

I never said they were.
Then why would they be picked above the others? None of them have any more value than the others.

I find it strange you have Sarich above Kubina because of the cup run, when Kubina was the guy shutting down all the top players from the other team.

Perhaps you guys missed it, but first, I've already admitted that a lot of this is based on PREFERENCE.

Secondly, the point is to post your own. Not just whining that someone thinks better or worse of a player than you.
