Just curious how y'all would rank the players from the 2021 entry draft. Would Knies crack the top 10? Edvinsson and Clarke have both had really great seasons so far and some of the top forwards of this class are starting to stagnate. How would you rank the top 10 players of this draft?

Off the top of my head

Luke
Edvinsson
Wyatt Johnson
Power
Clarke
Guenther
Beniers
McTavish
Kent Johnson
Eklund

HMs:
Moser
Sillinger
Knies
Zellwegger
Cossa

I'd go:

Power
Hughes
Wyatt Johnson
Clarke
McTavish
Edvinsson
Guenther
Eklund
Kent Johnson
Beniers

Sillinger
Knies
Coronato
Stankoven
Zellweger

  1. Hughes
  2. Edvinsson
  3. Guenther
  4. Johnston
  5. Clarke
  6. Eklund
  7. Johnson
  8. Power
  9. Beniers
  10. McTavish
  11. Stankoven
  12. Knies
  13. Sillinger
I guess something like this. I feel pretty solidly about the top 2. There’s quite a bit of room for movement after that

After that it's really up in the air. Eklund, Johnson, Guenther, Beniers, Johnston, and McTavish are all in the mix for highest forward IMO. Power and Clarke probably fall within that group somewhere.

Crazy to think that all 3 Hughes brothers likely go 1st overall in their respective re-drafts.

Edvinsson just became a full time starter this season while Hughes has been playing for a few years now but judging from this seaon's performance Edvinsson seems to have the edge moving forward.

The much more physical 6'6" Edvinsson has the same number of points while playing 0 PP time, whereas 6'2" Hughes gets 1:22 of PP time per game. Edvinsson plays 1:44 per game on the PK while Hughes plays 0 PK time.

Hughes this year: QoC -0.108 (sheltered), 55.85% OZ starts.
Edvinsson this year: QoC 0.440 (among the highest in the entire NHL), 46.7% OZ starts.

Edvinsson is a bonafide top-2/3 defenseman today, holding his own in among the hardest minutes in the entire league and has equal offensive output with zero PP time.

I feel like this is going to be a productive exercise in "how to underrate Dylan Guenther".

Is it? Is he doing something special other than scoring goals (genuine question)?

And it's hard to tell how much of a goal scorer he is going to be - he looks like a 50 goal guy some stretches then a 20 goal guy in others.

Wyatt Johnston is a bonafide stud, future elite #1C in the league. He's getting super overlooked and I have no idea how he's not unanimously ranked #1 by everyone. Hyperbole and all, it really seems like people don't watch the Stars and see what's he's been and currently is capable of

1) Wyatt Johnston
2) Simon Edvinsson
3) Luke Hughes
4) Dylan Guenther
5) Matty Beniers
6) Mason McTavish
7) William Eklund
8) Kent Johnson
9) Brandt Clarke
10) Owen Power

HM: Logan Stankoven, JJ Moser, Matt Coronato, Matthews Knies, Olen Zellweger, Ryker Evans

I'm a Big Ed booster, so I like that he's listed up there at the top with Luke Hughes. I haven't seen much of L Hughes in his breakout yet so I won't comment on whether he should be one or two.

I would explore having Power, Clarke, Guenther, and McTavish below Beniers, KJ, and Eklund, certainly McTavish should be lower. I think Eklund has shown so much versatility and scoring ability, it's hard not to put him higher. KJ is still wildly inconsistent but I could also see him scoring 100+ pts some day, his crazy high upside is not one bit diminished from his draft season. Beniers has a ton of play driving ability - he's not a finisher at all but I think his points will shoot up if he gets paired with the right linemates.

I have watched the Stars periodically and I didn't realize that Johnston's scoring has popped back up so much in the last month or so. He wasn't doing much earlier this year.

In this case, yes I would consider having him ahead of Ed and Luke.

Edvinsson has definitely had the better season, but its still early enough that this one could go either way between the 2 of them

ETA: Have Beniers slightly ahead of Eklund because he plays a more premium position. Power falls out of top 10 rather easily.

Beniers has the quality of not being someone you love in an offensive or defensive role, his on ice shooting percentage is always pretty high to really high and he doesn't even score much.

I disagree, he's got the tools to be a premium defensive player, if you wanted him for that. He doesn't shoot much and needs to be paired with players who can do that, as well as some big bodies to help him cycle the puck, but what he does add in terms of carrying pucks and gaining the zone is very valuable, and he is a strong two-way type.
