There really is no debate. Carlson is heads and shoulders above DZ and should continue to be in the future. He was scary good his rookie year as a shutdown defender. Took a step back, but was still matching up against top lines night in night out. Once DZ gains Tortorella's trust in that role, we can start comparing the two.
Carlson was matching up against top lines because there is no other option. His competition on RD was Dennis Wideman and Mike Green. Del Zotto's competition is McDonagh and Staal.

Members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association disagree with you. MDZ 12th best D man last year, Carlson not even top 20.
Defensively, they are absolutely scrubs. Definitely not comparable to Staal and McDonagh as shut-down defensemen. Not like they're scrubs.

I don't understand what point you're making here. What is proven? Will have to take proven > unproven in this case.
That is a very poor way of judging who #12 is.
3 guys gave him some low rank votes. Ask writers to actually rank the top 20 and you'll get a better idea.

very good, but not great. He is a solid top 4 dman with top pairing potential.
