Records stolen from Wayne Gretzky?

No idea. A lot of "records" aren't really records in that they're unofficial, as in the NHL doesn't officially count them as records.

Two of his Oilers' records that were later broken were:
-- Fastest 2 goals scored: Taylor Hall
-- Points scored on consecutive team goals: Sam Gagner 11 (Gretzky had done 10 twice)

One NHL record that was broken not long (five years) after Wayne set it was most short-handed goals in a season. Wayne had 12 in 1984, but Mario scored 13 in 1989.

This is the first one that comes to mind, and the only one of Gretzky's 'major' records I can think of that has been broken.

Calder trophy in 1979-1980 along with the rookie scoring record.
Strange how they didn't give the Calder to Gretzky on the basis he played for a "professional" league prior to the NHL (the WHA), when they did give the Calder to Makarov at age 30, after he literally played for years in a professional league. Made no sense whatsoever.

same with bure, forsberg, and yes 22 year old selanne, the beneficiary of gretzky’s stolen record.

Makarov was employed by the Soviet military, not by a hockey club.

Didn't Gretzky have a personal contract with Pete Pocklington instead of the Edmonton Oilers or something to that effect?

Yeah, and Pocklington allegedly even used that contract as collateral for a loan. Could have had interesting consequences had that gone south. Gretzky did sign a contract with the Oilers before his trade to LA though.

Yeah, Gretzky had a bizarre "Personal Services" contract with Pocklington, signed on his 18th birthday in 1979, that reads like he's chattel.

I don't know at which point, exactly, he was required to have a "normal" NHL contract, but, as Albatross says above, Wayne signed a 2-year contract with Pocklington in summer 1987 (just before the Canada Cup) that locked him in for the next two years -- in theory, to summer 1989.

However, we all know that went south in summer 1988...

Ovechkin might break 894 goals. If he does - this would obviously be the highest profile record that Gretzky established, and then lost.

What's the second? Anything else somewhat substantial?

The first of Gretzky's signature records to fall could be his 894 goals, but the coronavirus might be enough to stop Ovechkin if the NHL can't play a complete season next year either.

Edit - beaten to it

Most 50 goal seasons? A record he shares with Bossy at 10. Ovechkin sits at 8, he only needed two more to get a 9th this season.

Here is another one mentioned:

Pat Hughes of the Edmonton Oilers becomes the first player to break an NHL record set by Wayne Gretzky. Hughes scores two shorthanded goals in a span of 25 seconds during the second period of a 7-5 victory at the St. Louis Blues.

Is this still a record?

At this point i'll say it's less than 0.1% likelihood Ovechkin beats that record.

It's actually 9 for Gretzky/Bossy - not 10. Ovechkin is at 8. So he'd need 2 more. The issues for Ovi are:

- He'll be 35 next season. 2 50+ goal seasons after age 35? Even for Ovi that seems impossible
- Even if he somehow wanted to defy the odds yet again at such an age - odds are next year won't even be a full 82 game season, which limits him again
- This season is done. Round robin won't count as season, and so he misses the mark with 48 (even though he surely would have hit 50 without the pandemic)
- He has seasons of 49 goals, 48 (this year), 46 goals and 32 in 48 games (lock out year - which translates to 54 in full season). So has some super close - with at least 2 seasons (this year, and lockout) seeming like surefire bets, but conditions outside of his control limited him

So - he'll end up super close - in fact he may even tie them somehow - but him actually beating them and getting 10 50 goal seasons seems all but impossible as of today.

Found two minor ones:
  • Most times Top 10 in the NHL Total Goals On Ice For. Gretzky was 14 times in the top 10, Lidstrom 15 times.
  • Most times Top 10 in the NHL Power Play Goals On Ice For. Gretzky had the record with 10 seasons, but has since been surpassed by Bourque, MacInnis and Lidstrom.

When he retired, Gretzky held 61 NHL records. (Yes, it's sometimes arbitrary as to what counts as an official record, and what doesn't - there are probably 100+ achievements that can be categorized as "records"). I believe he's down to "only" 55 as of today:

Records he's lost
  1. Most career goals - Alex Ovechkin (895 in 2025)
  2. Most career 40 goal seasons - Alex Ovechkin (13 in 2023 - he extended the record to 13)
  3. Most assists in one playoff series - Leon Draisaitl (15 in 2022 - vs Calgary)
  4. Most assists in one playoff year - Connor McDavid (32 in 2024 - he extended the record to 34)
  5. Most overtime assists - there are more than 50 players who have broken Gretzky's record of 15. Evgeni Malkin is the current leader with 31.
  6. Most all-star game assists - Joe Sakic, Mark Messier and Ray Bouque have all passed Gretzky's record of 12.
Records he's gained
  1. Highest point per game average - Mario Lemieux came out of retirement and lowered his per-game scoring average. Gretzky's 1.92 PPG average is the current record.
