Arttu Ruotsalainen for Filip Gustavsson?

Sabres desperately need a goalie. Most Sabres fan will agree that R2's time is probably running out in Buffalo and he's the type that's top 6 or bust. Fast skater, fantastic shot.

Ruotsalainen is interesting but Gustavsson doesn’t move the needle at all. Will fight for a starting role in Ottawa next season. Anton Forsberg is a goalie Ottawa is likely willing to move however.

Whatever goalie you're willing to throw at us is fine.

I said Gustavsson b/c he's had some success and you guys have Hogberg coming.

But we'll take Forsberg. We're probably starting our 6th-string goalie Saturday........and we're not sure about Anderson or Tokarski's health just yet.

Oh, and Dell just got his dumb and incompetent ass suspended.

Hogberg is actually back in the SHL this year, didn’t even get a qualifying offer by Ottawa.
Gustavsson is the goalie that Ottawa holds in high regard.

I think we're talking young, cheap guys. You know, if a team has a former first round pick who like 4-5 years later still hasn't cracked your team because they're top 6 or bust and they can't crack your top 6 and aren't gritty enough to play in the bottom 6 so they are in the AHL putting up big numbers. We swap a draft pick and give them a shot on our decimated big club.

Some guys I've identified:

- Kevin Stenlund, RW, CLB: Big, 25yr old RW who is having a good season in the A and has had some success in the NHL. Some bottom-6 upside.
- Joey Anderson, RW, TOR: Small energy winger, likely only projects as a tweener but could fill in, potentially have some future here, and allow Toronto to recoup a late-round pick (only have their 1st, 2nd and 7th this year)
- Kristian Vesalainen, W, WPG: big winger with skill. Has been an everyday player for the Jets but hasn't produced yet. His pro numbers elsewhere have been ok, but not amazing. Will require waivers next season, although that doesn't seem to be a huge threat. Hard to get a read on the asking price for this one. Had a thought about Ottawa taking Little to offset some of the value.
- Glenn Gawdin, C/RW, CGY: having a good season in the AHL but hasn't gotten much of a shot in Calgary. Would certainly get that chance here in Ottawa.
- Justin Bailey, RW, VAN: Big RW who has filled in as an NHLer for the past 7 seasons, but still only at 82 games. Certainly not an every day NHLer, but a guy who Vancouver might move in order to give him a chance at some ice. On the other hand, depending on the moves Vancouver is going to make, they might want to keep him around.
- Brendan Perlini, W, EDM: noticing a trend here? Big, speedy (mostly) RW from a Canadian team who has yet to really put it together. He has some similarities to Zach Sanford, who may be moved at the deadline but who has gotten opportunities up and down the lineup due to his size and speed.
- Max McCormick, LW, SEA: a former Sen, he never really had NHL upside but he plays hard and would fit our current identity. Capable of filling in as needed, as he has done in Carolina and Seattle over the previous two seasons.
- Brett Connolly, W, CHI: highly paid, recently waived, a history of scoring from which he is relatively far removed. The only way this trade happens is if we send Michael Del Zotto the other way, and even then we might require some retention or a mid/late-round pick.
- Tyler Benson, LW, EDM: seems less like the type of guy we'd target, as we already have Gaudette and Ennis in the lower half of our lineup. But he is an option. Good AHLer who has yet to show much of anything in the NHL.
- Zack Senyshyn, W, BOS: a guy we liked in his draft year, and probably would have tried to get if he was available in the late 1st/early 2nd. Things haven't gone well for him and he wants out of Boston. Could be a 4th line filler guy if he puts it all together.
- Josh Leivo, W, CAR: things have sort of fallen apart for him since leaving Vancouver, where he looked pretty good. Mostly played AHL for Carolina this year. Has some skill and some drive.
- Emil Bemstrom, C/W, CLB: a highly touted prospect who we pushed to get in the Duchene/Dzingel deals, but to no avail. He hasn't progressed as desired and might be available. Like Vesalainen, the cost would actually be tangible.
- Buddy Robinson, RW, ANA: another former Sen who has been in and out for Anaheim this year, to the tune of a career high 20 games played. Huge, strong, decent skater, not much else.
- Joel Kiviranta, RW, DAL: after an excellent playoff run in his rookie season that saw him play the hero and post 5 goals in 14 games, Kivi has not been able to be an impactful player for Dallas. He only played 26 games last year - although he was relatively productive with 11 points - and this year he only has 4pts in 33 games. At 25yrs old with a 1.05m QO, his days in Dallas might be numbered.
- Alex Barré-Boulet, C, TB: on waivers earlier this season, he's been productive for Tampa in limited opportunity. Might be worth taking a swing on now that we're decimated by injury, especially down the middle.

Hogberg is actually back in the SHL this year, didn’t even get a qualifying offer by Ottawa.
Gustavsson is the goalie that Ottawa holds in high regard.
Hogberg signed a 5yr deal in Sweden I think. We do also have Sogaard on the way, and Merilainen, but Ottawa gave Goose a 1-way deal next year for a reason. He has the potential to be a starter and, at the very least I think, a very good backup who pushes your starter.
What about swapping someone for Brannstrom? Guy needs his own fresh start
Why? Is some other team gonna play him on the top pairing, 20.5-23.5mins a game like we were doing before he got COVID?
If Brannstrom is dealt, it will be in a package for a top 4 RD or top 6 RW.
Pavel Zacha is your guy.
I feel like the cost here would be too high but I do like Zacha.
Denisenko, Lind, Senyshyn, Bleackley (lol), Rubtsov
Senyshyn feels like a no-brainer to me at this point.

Vesalainen stands out to me here. He will likely cost the most of of all the players mentioned but likely has the most upside.

Vesalainen & Bemstrom are the two that would cost a decent asset and yeah, Vesalainen would cost the most. The others I would give low-end prospects (think, NCAA guys like Loheit, Tychonick, Novak who we won't sign), AHLers, late rounders (6th/7th) and/or FC. Kiviranta I would give a bit more for, but not more than a 5th.

Robinson has been alright as a depth winger but you don't want to try him in your top 6.

Sam Steel seems like he'd best fit OP's description from the Ducks. He's been playing better and more confident of late, has four points in his last four games. In the big picture he's clearly behind the other young centers on the roster (Zegras/Lundestrom) with McTavish on his way, and the Ducks have their vets who can fill in the rest (Getzlaf, Henrique, Grant, Carrick).

Steel has bounced between 4C and playing LW, at this point it seems like there may be better opportunities for him out there.

Steel would be a very good add. Robinson would be pure 4th line.

Steel is very interesting, what kind of asset would he cost?

Not a reclamation, but I am hoping Drury doesn't do something stupid and try to extend Strome b'c we have zero cap room next year, can't afford at any #, and keeping Strome will eventually mean losing a younger, cheaper asset w/more upside.
So, he's a ufa, but if as you say you need bodies now, give a reason to send.

He's worth a late 1st as a rental w/offense, a bit more if retained.
Give me a decent price on a package deal which will drop the overall price.

Sens 2022 3rd, 2023 2nd for Strome
Sens 2022 5th for McKegg

He has actually turned his game around and is looking more and more like the top 4 dman the Sens wanted. I think he gets re-signed. With him extending, Mete is the one heading out the door.
