Ottawa wont give a first for Puljujarvi, maybe their latest 2nd

I can live with that... DAL 2020-2nd maybe?

If he was still sticking to his guns, then a 2nd rounder is probably fair, but there's no sense at all in Edmonton trading him for that without seeing him under Tippett first.

Compared to last year...
Stutzle/Byfiel replaces Pageau
Norris replaces Namestinkov
Batherson replaces Ennis
Formenton replaces Boedker
Logan Brown probably plays more than 23 games
Ryan probably plays more than 24 games

I'm not sure there's as many roster spots available as people think.

Not real or expected lines, but just for the sake of it:
Tkachuk - White - Ryan
Duclair - Byfield/Stutzle - Batherson
Norris - Tierney - C.Brown
Formenton - L.Brown - ????

???? could be guys like Balcers, Abramov, Paul, Anisimov

Chabot, Zaitsev, Brannstrom, and probably Wolanin are the only 4 'locks' on D though. Guys like Bernard-Docker and Lassi Thompson may make the team but I wouldn't call it likely. That's why I think getting someone like Russell makes some sense instead of playing a7/8D like Mike Reilly.

Unless one of our guys goes the other way, we really only have room for maybe 1 'project' up front. We have enough magic beans right now.

I wouldn’t automatically assume Byfield/Stutzle will be playing in the nhl next season. Don’t forget, Byfield just turned 18 this month.

He is but that’s the Oilers being the Oilers . Trying to jam a square peg into a round hole . With a hammer . You get it in the hole but it won’t look pretty once it is there

Yeah, I get that for sure. I just don’t think he’s the kind of guy Ottawa would be looking to acquire is all.

Leafs fans would hate it but I seriously wonder if something around Kassian and Kapanen would have legs.

They badly need some bite, Edmonton needs a skill injection. Edmonton adds, sure, but Kapanen's numbers without Matthews aren't that different than Kassian's without McDavid...

That's his "just get rid of him" price. If he's signing - and the indications are right now that he is - there's zero reason for Edmonton to move him for that.

Well, there’s also zero reason for Ottawa to move a first for him, so maybe there’s no fit here, which is ok.

Well, we disagree there - if 25th or later overall gets you a plug and play top six winger, which Puljujarvi very well could be, I'd do it so fast it would make his agent's head spin.

Remember, at his absolute worst in Edmonton, he was a third line winger. If he comes back and that's what he is for you at a nearly league minimum contract for a couple years, that's more than covered your low first rounder bet.

I think Lias for a 2nd is a good trade for both teams. I still believe he will end up in the NHL.

Maybe, but I know very little about the player. I could see Ottawa moving a second for a guy like that though considering they have 7 second rounds picks in the next two drafts.

Do you honestly believe this? I usually agree with most of your points. Puljujarvi lacks the hockey sense to be a top 6 player. Kind of like Sam Bennett without the bite to his game. Even 3rd line winger might be beyond him. I'm not saying there is no chance there, but I think it's unlikely. He's averaged 9 goals and 19 points per season so far, those are 4th line numbers.

I think he could definitely come back as a 2nd liner.

While his numbers weren't fantastic, keep in mind that he was 18/19 years old for most of it. Trending for 14 goals at even strength as a 19 year old is nothing to sneeze at.

His underlying numbers with skilled players were always pretty solid, but his most common linemate by far was Lucic.

Don't tether him to your version of Lucic, give him some powerplay time, and don't punish him every time he screws up, and I'd cheerfully predict he scores in the 40-45 point range.

IMO, Rangers botched his situation. Rushed him, then put him in a position where he couldn't succeed. I (as well as a few Rangers posters) thought he had a really good training camp last year and was going to be utilized on the third line, but he started on the fourth line with Brett Howden and was sent down. Played less than 10 minutes a game. I don't think the frustrations necessarily show signs of immaturity. The World Juniors medal toss gets blown out of proportion.

Individually, he needs to play with faster players, but the Senators organization is building a roster with a lot of speed. Has he grabbed the bull by the horns? Nope. But, he is still just 21-years old, and if he is moved, which I think is increasingly more likely now that he is staying in Sweden, I think he plays with a chip on his shoulder for the next organization he goes to. I think this is one of those cases where it is both player and team.

Going to Ottawa would be a great situation for him. Longer timeline, less media scrutiny, and a roster that complements his strengths (he has a solid two-way game). HF will tell you he has "no value," but 21-year olds who need a change of scenery are always worth 2nd/3rd-round picks, especially to a team that has a treasure chest of picks the next two years.

Sounds like Nikita Filatov to me. He was also a top ten pick who moved onto another organization (Ottawa). The cost was a third round pick, and it didn’t work out, but it was worth taking the risk in my mind.

I don't see it. But who knows? Maybe he magically acquires hockey sense. It happened with Paul Byron for a couple seasons.
