Realignment is HERE (BOG APPROVED, Post #87)

For geographic & travel reasons, they should swap the Islanders and Rangers with Tampa Bay and Florida.

Conference C
Boston
Buffalo
New York Islanders
Montreal
Ottawa
Quebec?
New York Rangers
Toronto

Conference D
Carolina
Detroit
New Jersey
Florida
Tampa Bay
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
Washington

That would make zero sense since the Isles and Rangers would each be geographically closer to 3 of the teams in the other division than any team in their own. We're not going to be in the same division as a team that plays less than 10 miles away? No way.

Best option I've seen kicked around thus far was this one that Djp put forth on the BoH board:

Conference A
Anaheim
Calgary
Colorado
Edmonton
Los Angeles
Phoenix
San Jose
Vancouver

Conference B
Chicago
Columbus
Detroit
Minnesota
Winnipeg
Toronto
Buffalo
Pittsburgh

Conference C
Boston
Montreal
Ottawa
Rangers
Islanders
Philadelphia
NewJersey

Conference D
Carolina
Washington
St Louis
Dallas
Nashville
Florida
Tampa Bay

Detroit and C-Bus are appeased because they now have 3 other ETZ teams in their Division.

Dallas is happy to be out of the Pacific. Nashville is happy because they at least get two other CTZ teams in their division

Boston stays with Montreal, Toronto returns to their Norris roots but has a Canadian team in the division with them this time in Winnipeg and now renews rivalries with DET and CHI even thought they lose MTL.

Possible upset teams might be PIT who loses it's traditional NY and Philly rivals although it gains with 3 O6 teams, and then you'd have STL who loses the other "Norris" opponents except DAL.

If PHX relocates to SEA, they stay put. If they go to QC they jump into Conference C with MTL and OTT.

You're right in that there really is little or no other way. I can't imagine the Florida teams will like the extended travel up north to play divisional games. I'm also a little selfish in that I want to see the Isles and Lightning as much as possible.

I wonder what Garth and Wang think about this realignment.

It's funny that you mention Florida teams and traveling up north but this is the case in every sport for them. Florida in the last 20 years or so have gained the Lightning,Panthers,Marlins,Rays,Jaguars,Heat and Orlando (not sure what the Orlando team is called and nor do i care) that's 7 freaking franchise's and many of those 7 teams are playing in the Eastern Divisions not really near anyone else due to that rivalry factor. I really don't want to go through a complete examination of how every one of the major pro sports can be re aligned but Miami and Jacksonville don't even play in the same division in football and there in the same conference!!!

While I would much rather see this, it has ZERO chance of happening. No way the Devils-Rags, Rags-Philly get split up. Would love to see it but it will never happen.

The Rangers were once great rivals with Boston. I'm sure Ranger - Bruin (think Boston vs NY) would grow just as intense as Rangers - Philly. I think the Devils could build their rivalry with Philly and Pittsburgh. Philly could build a rivalry with Washington.

I also think Tampa Bay and Florida are better suited as rivals with Carolina and Washington, then teams in the Northeast.

Your thinking from the Rangers and Islanders perspective. Two traditional hockey markets.

What about Tampa Bay and Florida. That makes less then "zero sense". When they travel, they have to fly over all of conference D to get to games in their conference in cities like Boston, Montreal or Ottawa. They're much better suited to play Carolina and Washington in their conference.

Don't necessarily disagree with you, that's why in the scenario I posted above in what I considered to be the best one put forth, all of those teams were together in a Division/Conference. You can do that rather easily without splitting off NJ and Philly from the NY teams.

I kind of like the changes.

Playoffs will take getting used to but the rivalries in the playoffs should be amazing

I think it might make the playoffs a tad more intense.. I might be in the minority but I've loved the past few playoffs as a whole. Now you'll have divisional rivalries in every single series for the first two rounds and then after that its already the conference finals... Should be cool.

Then you're spitting Buffalo from Montreal and Ottawa, not too mention Montreal and Toronto, an important orignal 6 rivalry.

When you look at all of the scenarios, there is no perfect system.

So now we wind up with unequal divisions, which is patently unfair. The current system is fine and they only need to realign for WPG.

The answer is so simple, so of course they can't do it.

There have been rumblings of expansion for over a year now .. With Quebec City and a second Toronto team most like the favorites.. Also gotta think Seattle is in consideration especially if Phoenix is going to move. They add the two teams it would make 4 divisions of 8 and it'd be all even which is what I believe they're aiming for..

I for one am not in favor of the realignment.. Like you said swap winnipeg with someone else and it'd be fine.. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Really I don't get why they don't just move Winnipeg to the West and Columbus to the East. Columbus plays in the Eastern Time Zone and hasn't been around long enough/ever been good enough to establish any good rivalries.

i wish they keep it the same way, but just switch det and Winnipeg. even tho the wings have always been a power house, its still a better scenaro than what the current proposel is . we would have to b better than some very good teams, that sucks

Realignment Updates

The East 8's and the West 7's

IV: ANA/CAL/EDM/LA/PHOE/SJ/VAN ( West 7 )

III: CHI/COL/DAL/MIN/NASH/STL/WIN ( Mid West 7 )

II: BOS/BUF/DET/FLA/MON/OTT/TB/TOR ( the WTF 8 )

I: CAR/CLB/NJ/NYI/NYR/PHI/PIT/WASH ( East 8 )

every team would play home-and-home
Some kind of wild-card is being discussed for the two 8-team divisions. I'm not sure of the outcome, though

I hate uneven divisions. Just expand to 32 teams and make it look pretty. Add a team in Seattle & Quebec.

Moving Columbus and Pitt to the WTF8 and Tampa and Florida to our division would seem to make more sense...

There's always talk about Quebec expansion.
How is that going to effect the eastern 8 teams? Wouldn't one have to move west?
Seattle will slot nicely into a western conference.

This is the hockey hotbeds (also league offices), Montreal and Toronto getting their wishes and sliding into the easy division.

Cant understand geographically TBay and Florida there, but if they take Carolina and Columbus it still the same weak division.

as suggested above Pitt wont move from Phillys division, be like splitting the Isles and Rangers.

I think part of the logic behind moving Toronto and Montreal into the same division as the Florida teams is both teams will draw good down there due to Snowbirds(Canadians who move south for the winter).

All that being said if 2 teams switched places with those I am guessing it would be Columbus and Pittsburgh(I could be wrong but Pittsburgh is closer to Columbus, Detroit and Buffalo then Philly).

So the East is getting Detroit and Columbus for Winnipeg. I'm sure the other Western teams are going to be thrilled about this.

Detroit kids get to watch games at 7PM now instead of a third of the games starting at 10 PM on school nights. Good for them!
