Trade everyone worth anything, field an NHL team made up almost entirely of a middle-of-the-road AHL team. Sounds like standard forum stuff. Fun to think about until you realize that you'd be rushing maybe a dozen prospects and end up icing a team that would get destroyed by even the basement dwellers of the league night in and night out. I'm sure all of those guys would develop nicely being thrown in completely over their heads with almost no support.

EDIT: Should probably add, I'm down for trading some big pieces, but it has to be surgical and it has to be thought out. The trade everyone - call up everyone idea is horrible. It'd ruin prospects and it'd lead to this team being beaten badly, worse than they have been, every single night. There are reasons none of those guys are in the NHL right now. Maybe one or two of them are behind marginal guys like Pyatt int he org's eyes - the rest just aren't ready.

I'm guessing you didn't actually read my original post. The Rangers have about 8 guys in their system that are between 21 and 23 years old with the possibility of becoming NHL players that I named in the original. We aren't talking a bunch of 19-20 year olds. I seriously doubt these guys' development would be ruined by getting 20-40 games in the NHL this season to evaluate where they are while the big team gets what it can from expiring contracts on the trade market. JT Miller is the youngest of the group and is already getting time on the big squad.

I wouldn't expect the team to win a bunch of games during this time, as I mentioned in the original post, which would get NY a better 1st rd pick in June. On the other hand, I don't think they would get destroyed every night either. This slightly above, bottom dwelling team didn't do so hot against Pittsburgh's AHL defense the other night. They didn't have more skill, but a lot more heart... something this NYR team is seriously lacking. Is Pitt scared that they are ruining all of their prospects by playing them right now? I don't think so.

You can't just sell everything off, and then throw the kids to the wolves. That's a path of mismanagement. Even if this team was going to "re-tool" they would still have to bring in some stop-gap players for next season. Guys like Pouliot or Pyatt are fine in that role. Guys who are what they are, and you don't have to worry about stunting their development as players because you expect the team to play poorly. They're crucified now because this team was expected to win. On a team that has no expectations, they're fine.

Reclamation projects, guys who are trying to break back into the league after missing out on jobs due to the cap shrinking, veterans who want another paycheck before retirement. Those are the guys you target as free agents. Let the kids develop in a winning environment and bring them up together. Target guys in trade who are stuck behind log-jams due to strength within their respective organizations, or players who don't fit the mold of what their GM wants. Have a strong draft with a high pick involved. This team could be far better than the one we have now in 2 years. Hank is locked up, there's no longer the fear of losing him at the end of the year.

When the time comes to start climbing back into the ring, you need veterans with a pedigree who can help mentor your kids. The Pens did that with Guerin, Roberts, etc. Chicago did that. Boston did that. Edmonton hasn't done that and you see where they are. Another top-5 pick in their sights. They threw the kids out there and let them run a muck.

staal is not damaged goods how can you guys even say that..

is his history good.. No!

But I can think of more then 10 guys off the top of my head that have been more injury prone..

he can come back and shine for us..

YOu guys are in lala land to think sather will sell and get rid of Callahan and G..

you dont get rid of guys that are your captains and leaders and give 25min+ a night..

MDZ, Brass, even hagelin will go before Staal, Girardi or Callahan

It would be a great in a world where you don't have to concider cap space, age, injury risk and the wanted length of the contracts.

Cally is injury prone because of his style of play, a risk which is not going to diminish as he gets older, and has missed a good chunk of games the last 3-4 years to injury. He is 28 years old and will aim for a long term deal, probably 5-7 years at beween 5 and 6 mill. a season. A worn down 34 year old Callahan making 6 mill. a year I fear will feel like the ghost of Chris Drury.

Girardi is 29 and will most likely aim for something similar to Cally. I don't want to get rid of Girardi, but if we don't move him we might see him walk away for nothing. If Girardi is willing to sign a deal smiliar to the one he has today it's a no brainer, but I don't think that is the case.

The only D men on the main roster right now that is locked in for next year is McD and Staal.

We also has to resign at least Krieder and Zuccarello. Both a low paid guys today that will cost at least twice as much as today going on. Stepan and Hags' deals are also up after next season.

And Marc Staal is most certainly damaged goods if we're talking about trade value. The guy hasn't played a full schedule since the 2009-10 season. Since then he has played 77 (not bad), 44, 21 (lockout season) and 30 this season. That is a lot of games missed becuase of head related injuries, and something that most certainly would affect the trade value. His play hasn't exactly been stellar the last couple of years either. He might come back better than ever, but he also might be just one blow away from becoming a member of the Michael Sauer Club.

If we just resign everyone we have on the roster today with bigger deals we are going no ****ing way. Players like Cally and Girardi might become to expensive going forward relative to what we get from them on a 5-7 year deal. These two players alone could be a 10-12 mill. cap hit if resigned. With Hank, Richards and Nash on huge deals we will have little room to improve with experience.

Great post - don't disagree one whit.

(Well, except with the creative representation of "amok" at the very end.) ;)

Rangers can only go in two directions. Trade some of the core (Girardi, Callahan, Boyle) or trade away prospects. This re-tooling crap hasn't worked. How many more Pouliots and Moores can you sign before you realize this team is rotten at its core? They can re-shuffle the outer pieces of this roster all they want. It won't make a difference.

I agree its time to sell and blow this team up.

Trade the following and we'll get something good for each of them - swing for can't miss prospects and draft picks: R Callahan, M Staal, D Girardi, R Nash, A Stralman

Kick the tires on: Brad Richards (if no bites, release in off-season), D Dorsett, D Brassard, D Moore, B Boyle - I wouldn't move them unless its for a ton - like i said kick the tires and move them in the off-season or let them walk/release.

I don't think we'll get anything of value back for Pouliot, Pyatt, act. So keep them around for this season because we do need to ice a team after all.

Don't move the following - J Moore, M Zuccarello, C Talbot, D Stepan, JT Miller, D McIlrath, R McDonagh,
C Kreider, C Hagelin, H Lundqvist, M Del Zotto, prospects / picks.

Let the scrubs and kids play the year out. In the off-season see how the incoming propects are doing in terms of making the 2014-2015 team and then fill the holes with Free Agents. Have a good draft and hope for the best.

Team to Ice for rest of 2014-

Kreider - Stepan - Kristo
Hagelin - Brassard - Zuccarello
Richards - Miller -Fast
Pouliot - Boyle - Dorsett
EX: D Moore

McIlrath - McDonagh
Falk - Moore
Del Zotto - Allen
EX: Bickel

The thing that worries me is Lundqvist's contract. It tells me that Sather and the front office still believe in this core of players. I'd absolutely LOVE to gut the whole team but I don't think Sather feels the same, would require admitting he ****ed up which he'd never do.

However, if Callahan and Girardi wanted reasonable contract extensions, they'd probably have been signed by now, so hopefully they're pricing themselves out of NY.

Cally was the heart and soul of our team last year. Has one bad season and now no one wants him… Id dump AV before cally and G

You're in lala land if you think this team's captain and half of the roster are actually playing with 110% effort every night. They've all made themselves expendable. No one is exempt from a trade except Lundqvist right now. Captains and top minute-getters get traded all the time, why should they be sacred cows just because they wear letters or because they can physically be put out on the ice? Because there are no other players that could possibly take on the "workload" they have here?

I think any moves that are going to be made under Sather are just going to be a waste of assets. We're going to go for the biggest splash possible with complete disregard of everything else then wonder in a year why we still suck. I've pretty much given up on this organization for the season, just not worth the energy contemplating the best course of action when it's clearly never going to happen with this management.

It has nothing to do about not wanting Cally and Girardi. It has to do with wheter you are willing to lock aging guys up in big expensive long term deals when they probably is about to peak performance wise at the moment. Both will also be prime candidates for No-Trade/No-Movement clauses if they resign.

Dear god I've been writing that incorrectly for decades and I had no idea!

I'm glad spelling and grammar isn't such an issue in web development.

Glad to help, my friend, glad to help. :) In other news, and since we're on the subject, for anyone who cares...

- The adjectival form of bias is biased.

- A lot is two words.

- It's per se, not per say. (It's a Latin phrase.)

- The apostrophe should only be used to indicate a) ownership or b) a contracted letter/numeral. It is never, ever used in any other case, including ANY plural.

- When abbreviating a date, the apostrophe goes before the numbers (because, as mentioned above, you're contracting the numerals that indicate the century).

- The abbreviation (in English anyway) for first is 1st, that for second is 2nd, etc. I have NO idea where the whole "2ed" convention comes from.

The list goes on and on. And none of it matters in web development, which is a very valuable skill, necessary to the modern world, and one which I highly admire. (Seriously - I downloaded a book on Ruby on Rails for beginners a couple of years back, but never had the time to devote to really learn it.) Despite that fact, my English major soul dies a little each time I read these pervasive mistakes. :) (And, by the way, should anyone be nerdy enough to care to learn more about these things, I highly recommend "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" by Lynne Truss, which does a brilliant job of discussing common mistakes in English spelling and grammar and is absolutely hilarious in the process.)

EDIT: Oh, and to keep this on topic, of COURSE Cally should be available at the deadline for the right offer. He's an UFA, prone to breaking down and, as much as I admire him as a home-grown leader, he's hardly irreplaceable.

This is mostly how I feel as well,

Tanking without purpose is not the way to go, need some vets to mentor/shield the kids through the process, but this team is not going anywhere right now and they do not have any prospects who are going to change that. They need to sell and draft some real talent while at the same time keeping some semblance of a competitive team, or at least an improving stable one.

Never happen though, too many people think they can just add a free agent or two and change the direction. Plus that would sell more tickets. Might as well just give Thornton or Vanek a max contract right now to play with Nash because that will make everything better.

Cally was the heart and soul of our team last year. Has one bad season and now no one wants him… Id dump AV before cally and G

When only watching games and not seeing behind the scenes, it's impossible to get the full picture of things going on. But when you look at this team on the ice, you can see the effort level isn't where it needs to be. These guys don't seem to be pissed off enough about losing. Cally has been the heart and soul, but this year this team really lacks that heart and soul. This team is missing an identity. And when everyone isn't giving 100% night in and night out, things look even worse. As I said, looking just at the games, we really know nothing, but to me it seems that the culture inside the team isn't really preaching effort, motivation, heart and soul and such things. AV needs to take responsibility of that as well, but as he is a coach that lets the players to be among themselves a lot, I think Callahan as the captain should really be stepping up with others as well. We need real leaders to lead this team. If there is a guy with a Ray Lewis personality in hockey, I want that guy in this team. Somebody that doesn't let effort as poor as this just to go by. Somebody that wont be okay with his team mates just free riding. There are a lot of issues, but I think there's problems in leadership as well. The only guy in this team, who can be okay with his effort level is McDonagh. Others should examine themselves and look in the mirror.

In my opinion we need this

Threads like this are so pointless.

The Rangers are not selling. They're not going to waste a season, two seasons, three seasons of the epic contract they just signed Lundqvist to. The Rangers are in win now mode for the next 8 seasons. Get used to it.

What they can do, is re-tool, not rebuild. Very different.

I don't care that it's the holiday season, Sather, Gorton, and the front-office need to start working their ***es off to figure out where they're going to take this team when the freeze is over. Get some players in here who can play in AV's system. Sit down with AV and figure out what kind of players he needs, where they all see the team going.

This season is salvageable. AV needs to tweak the defensive system, and Sather needs to get more skill in here for AV.

There's a lot of losers in this locker room the team needs to purge.

Purge them to where? Bring in more skill. You don't go to Target to pick up skilled forwards. The available guys are either old or are bad players with bad contracts or are both. How does that help the team? You don't think the Rangers management and AV haven't sat down to discuss the roster? Vigneault constantly discusses meeting with management about personnel and looking at different options. A few months ago,he even said he had a date in mind for when he wanted to give management his overall opinion on the personnel of the team after being here for a certain period of time. They know which players have to be moved. They haven't moved them yet because its not that easy.

You make it sound so easy. You're like those people on twitter who want Sather to make these magical trades to bring the Rangers the Cup this season. The issues can't be solved in a few months.

Sorry, this season can't be salvaged. The organization has lost 2 of its best 4, defensive defenseman to career ending injuries. Staal coming back is just a pipe dream at this point. The 3rd and 4th lines are awful. The team has no grit, toughness and is terrible on faceoffs. This team is a long, long, long, ways away from being a contender.

They need to make 3 to 4 deals for high picks, prospects that are NHL ready and stop jerking around J.T. Miller and let the kid play already. This is a very bad hockey club.

Right about now in Canada, the Leafs, Oilers and Sens are in full panic mode because in Canada when you stink, it's not acceptable. Here, we are used to it. The Rangers have stunk plenty and life goes on in NY because there are tons of other sports in this city. Rangers most likely will make one deal with a Canadian team.

Of course this season can be salvaged. all it takes are a couple of deals, moving out 5 or 6 dead weight players and the dynamic of this team changes significantly. even if what we get in return is somebodies elses dead weight perhaps they gel better than this bunch, manage to stay above .500, gain some confidence in this crappy division, and anything can happen. Some of Glen's Gambles have to pay off eventually, right?

That's the exact attitude that has gotten this franchise one Stanley cup in 70 years.

Drafting better would be a start

You're always so quick to attack people who disagree with you.

I never said it was easy. You say I say it was easy. I'm sorry that was the tone you took from my post.

The way Sather runs this team, I think he's more of a Wal-Mart shopper than a Target shopper.

There are players/kids out there that the team can take a flyer on if the rumors serve true. Guys like Connolly, Zucker, Franson, Gardiner. I'm sure Sather has inquired about these players, I also understand that this isn't going to be an overnight process. Omark went to Buffalo for a conditional 6th. There's a guy with skill and talent, something this organization truly misses. Even if we had to stick him in the AHL, he'd infuse a ton of talent at that level. He's a point-per-game AHL player. Don't tell me Hartford couldn't use that, and maybe he puts it together in a new organization. For a conditional 6th.

You purge them for whatever you can. You shop Poo and Pyatt for picks. You can't get them? Waive them. Get them out of the locker room and out of the environment. Then you trade guys like Del Zotto, Girardi OR Callahan, and fill in the roster with what we receive for them. I understand it's not easy, but trades happen in the NHL - we need to be a more active team. I'm sure Sather is active, and I expect the activity to start up when the freeze is over. But don't tell me that I don't understand.

There are a lot of intelligent people on this board, you're not the only one RB.

Good post, agree with everything. The smallest moves can lead to the biggest changes but Sather isnt active

I read it. I can read it and still disagree with you. Age isn't really the important factor. A 19 year old who isn't ready for the NHL isn't necessarily worse than a 22 year old who isn't ready for the NHL. If you're not ready, you're not ready. You're looking way too much into age IMO. Putting players in over their heads for 20 - 40 games can and will stunt certain guys no matter how old they are.

They would absolutely get destroyed nearly every night. The game against Pitt was a sample size of 1. Anything can happen once. Is Pitt scared to be rushing so many prospects? Well, they didn't trade their whole D, they're hurt, so these aren't the same situations. Plus, I'd bet that they aren't crazy about throwing so many guys into the deep end, they simply have no choice. Plus, they have by far the best talent in the NHL on their team, which helps when you've got guys you're not sure of in the lineup.

Trxjw's post says what I'm thinking better than I can right now. Trade everyone and throw the kids in is an insane strategy.

nicely done.

Sounds great - especially, because I don't think it would take 5 years. I think you could do it in 2 with some of the quality pieces they have.

If you're gonna do it, however, Cally should be one of the guys to go - he's the perfect guy to ship out in such a scenario (imagine the bidding war for him at the deadline among playoff teams, regardless of the fact that he's an UFA) and it's not like you're lacking for leadership if you've still got Stepan on the team and Hank at the back end.

But it'll never happen with Sather at the helm.

trade him out west for a scoring right shot like jones/trouba/johnson/ and resign in the summer a la ' tkachuk!
