Re Signing Laine

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

In the meantime, feel free to join our Discord Server

So, dude is a rock star. We want to keep him, for sure! But, where is Patick in all this. Has he found his forever home? Will he be like, "I don't want to play anywhere else!" Will his wife be like, "Pat, yo, you gotta resign in Montreal! Your mental health is off the charts!!!! Yo!"?

Perosonally, I think the dude is like, "Montreal, you had me at standing ovation!!!!"

Hoping Laine wants to stay here. I loved him during his draft year, and was like, come home to Saku baby!.

We knew he was a great player when we got him. We need to see if he can put it together both on and off the ice over a consistent period of time before throwing what’s likely a big payday at him.

Laine quite injury prone, Dach looked great last year also. I would wait this year out.

It is more about his perspective rather than his performance. Do we feel he likes living and working in MTL?

Hockey as profession is injury prone.

Laine looked like current Dach for 3-5 games after he came back from concussion in CBJ. Outside of that, he's at least a PPG player

Dach is maybe showing signs of improvement at 35 games?

Should not be comparing though. Everyone understands they're a very different level of talent, right?

I’m full on fanboy mode right now, but I’d like to see 80 games played, first. Even if over this year and next.

Because an injured star player is a season killing distraction. Rather not have him, then not know when we’ll have him ready to go.

Now is the absolute worst time to consider signing.
He is on fuego with a crazy short sample size. Let's see how rest of year goes with him and his health before backing up the bank truck.
But yes, if it goes well, then we just scored a top line player for free basically.

Yeah, that’s why Panthers, Capitals, Leafs and and Oilers look to miss playoffs. I get what you are saying but a Contender needs to play at playoffs pace if one star player is injured.

That injury risk is inherent part of hockey to all hockey players and is always more than zero for everyone, but I know what you mean as it is also my biggest source of insecure feelings concerning Patrik and his future. Hoping his more serious health struggles would be over now. Patrik have had more than his fair share of those already, and combined with his personality and mental health issues makes me actually wonder where he even found enough strength to overcome latest setbacks.

I also fear that if Patrik again succumbs to a black abyss of his mind and disappears from game, how Habs fans react to that, as intense criticism can be devastating when a person have no full control over his inner ills. Hopefully Habs fans would be capable to show some mercy and understanding then.

It doesn't look like he has good chemistry with his linemates. Why would he like to stay and pay high taxes playing 13-16 minutes nightly being in the cold -7 after 9 games already. Once he stops hitting the net, shit is gonna rain down, we all know that

Why would Laine want to sign somewhere else ? We can give him a fair deal.
Maybe he wants to live someplace warm after spending his entire life in cold weather climates (Finland, Winnipeg, Columbus, Montreal)?

Maybe he wants to maximize his earnings in a no tax state with a lower cost of living?

Maybe he wants to live in a market where he won't be recognized every time he's in public?

Maybe his fiance wants to live elsewhere?

These are questions no one here knows the answers to.

I’d do it but there’s no rush - we need a lot more information, so does Patty.

Because if we resign him it’s probably going to be around 8M for a longer term (6-7 years?) It’s a commitment that he’s part of the core.

Well at this rate we pay him $12M X 8, but since its under 10 games in for him and we cant negotiate until after July 1, lets just sit back and see how the year plays out. My hope is that as teams figure out how to keep him from scoring on the PP from that ridiculous angle he often shoots from, that he starts producing 5 on 5 both on the cycle and off the rush. And he stays healthy.

PP stats for this season:

9 games
8 goals
32 total shot attempts (TSA)
____23 shots on goal (SOG)
_____4 blocks against (BA)
_____5 missed PP shots (MISS)

34.78% PP Shooting percentage (PP G/SOG)
71.88% PP Shots Through Percentage (PP SThr% = PP SOG/TSA)

For every 10 shots made over 7 are shots on goal.
For more than every third of shots on goal he makes the result is a scored goal.
His "Real PP Shooting%" is 25% (8G/32TSA), every fourth shot results a scored goal.

His PP Time on ice is 31.6 minutes and PPG/60 is 15.2, meaning that when he is playing PP, on average he scores a goal every 3.95 power play minutes.

It's inevitable that the league start change priorities in their PK. It is maybe "pick your poison" with Habs PP1, but everyone can see that these kind of PP stats for a player is something that must be adressed, regardless of whom-ever else maybe in the PP squad.

Stay healthy Patrik!

I wonder how deeply buried this thread is going to be when Laine has a cold streak and the novelty has worn off? lol

Real talk though, there's no need to address this right now, play out the rest of this season and go from there.

If things go well for the player and team, they'll find common ground for an extension.

The good times are rollin' right now and that's great, but how will we all feel when he's not shooting 24% and the PP goals have dried up?

My hope is that the rest of his game, 5 v 5, catches up before he stops scoring a PPG per game. If he were to be a 35 plus goal scorer for us that would be awesome.
