Players who hit 20 goals, even if it's for the first time, are going to get paid in free agency. Suter has given the Canucks fantastic value over the past couple of seasons at $1.5m per. But it's going to take at least $3-$4 million to re-up him, with longer term.

And as valuable a guy as he's been--the Canucks have young guys on ELC's who could potentially replace him. I suspect that guys like Sasson, Karlsson, Raty, Lekkerimak and maybe even Bains and Klimovich, will get long looks in training camp next season.

He'll be a loss if he leaves. But you have to feel happy for him. Suter has bounced around the league and definitely added elements to his game every year he's been in the NHL. So his payday will be well-earned.

I think it's worth slightly overpaying to keep players that you know fit with a coach and a system if that's what it takes. Better than rolling the dice on an unknown for a small savings.

The other aspect is that Suter has been remarkably consistent over the years. You know what you're going to get from him. I did comment earlier in the season that Suter is one of those players who could score a career high in goals one year but I won't pay him based on career totals as he tends to not convert on his opportunies. Smart player who is constantly in the right position and has a good shot though.

100%. Even when he's cold offensively hrs still bringing important special teams utility and solid defensive play.

This is a tough one for me. This team is full of mid-priced, middle 6 players. We probably have 3 3rd lines (some are b/n 2-3 and some are b/n 3-4). This team sorely needs top line talent...but I guess signing Suter to a reasonable deal shouldn't stop Allvin from big game hunting either.

It's centre depth as well. We went into last year's playoffs with Petey, Miller, Lindholm, Bluegar, Aman, Suter all having solid NHL experience playing C.

If Suter wants $3-$4m with term, he'll probably get it. I'm just not sure if will be from the Canucks. Or whether it should be.

If Suter and Boeser both 'walk' on July 1st, then the Canucks will have $16-$20m to really go 'big-game hunting'; on the UFA market.

In a normal season, Suter will give you 13-16 goals a season, sliding back and forth between the wing and center, mainly on the third and fourth lines. These guys are 'replaceable'.

But a top-six forward like Marner or Ehlers, you can't find unless you draft them, or break the bank to trade for them.

i go back and forth on suter. on one hand he's been pretty good his whole time here and he's got so much utility that it's easy to see him being an important part of the team but on the other hand there's no way this team is good if in the future he's seeing the kind of usage he's seen this season. he both seems like an integral component of the team and a luxury they can afford to lose

The 5C take was ludicrous back then and looks like one of the worst takes ever on this board.

Suter's been exactly as advertised - a middle six forward with a history of playing center and is now playing a huge role at center for us.

MS: "Suter is not even a 4C in the NHL - he's a 5C"

I am a vengeful god.

This is a tough one. He is very valuable as a middle 6 versatile forward. But is he a difference maker? I would absolutely sign him for $2Mx3 but he will get way more than that in free agency. I would take the $3.5M he's going to get, add $3M from the cap pool and sign or trade for a $6.5 M 2nd line centre.
That leaves roughly $6M to sign another top 6 forward.

I would be shocked to learn his hit next year doesn't start with a 4.

I said he was a utility winger who served as the team's 5th C option - which is literally *exactly* how he was used in 23-24. This was not a difficult thing to understand, then or now, and your inability to grasp what I was saying makes you look bad.

Also, weren't you banned? Did the board crash somehow let you back in?

OK, that makes perfect sense and I agree.

I don’t think many top 6 forwards are going to sign for 6 million anymore.

Nah, we need to find a Boeser replacement that can help EP attack with more speed. I'm relatively happy giving Lekkerimaki that ball to play with in the summer and see how he is next year, if he can find another gear.

Suter we should keep.

Pooling cap space to get a higher value piece is what they need. Suter is a tweener and will be too expensive.

Maybe both. Get 2 x$6.5M guys is probably a better option than Suter plus Boeser. It would likely need to be by trade. Or a $10M guy and a $3m guy. that might be the best option.

That just seems like two more Debrusks unless we're talking via trade.

Sorry the ADHD meds are still kicking in. Of the two, definitely a $10M and a $3M guy.

I would prefer to sign Ehlers and keep Suter, personally.

Honest to god, I wanted us to draft Ehlers in 2014. I banged that drum pretty flippin' hard.

E: For the record, I wanted to walk out the draft with Ehlers/Barbashev with our 1sts. Everything since then has been sweet sweet vindication.

If they can do that, that would be outstanding.

If we add a second line center this off season (which I assume is going to be a priority) not sure if the organization is going to want to pay a 4th line center whatever the tag is going to be to sign him. (This is assuming Chytil comes back.....if he doesn't re-signing Suter becomes much more likely).

At some point they need to give Raty a look as well........althou to me it's a bit strange he already isn't with the big club..........perhaps the organization has decided he's a guy they might want to move off of and he's gonna have more value lighting it up in Abby then he will playing 10 minutes a night in Van? Otherwise why isn't he with the big squad right now?

re-sign him to the post-salary cap increase equivalent of the career year dickinson contract? absolutely

re-sign him to the equivalent of the eriksson contract? absolutely not

with his 20 goal season, i fear he is closer to the latter than the former

would be sad to lose him though. how many guys can occasionally fill in on the wing as the third guy on the top line, credibly center the second line for stretches, kill it on the third line at all three positions, be one of the best fourth line centers in the league in an all-in scenario where everyone is healthy and the team is loaded up for a playoff run, be one of the best PK forwards in the league, and hold his own on PP2?
