It's not just about the hype and the raw stats (point totals). It is the eye test that shows he has the high end offensive skills that not everyone can attain no matter how hard they work at it. When I first saw Cale Makar after he was drafted I knew then he could be the best offensive dman ever to play the game. His skillset was off the charts. In many ways I see that high of a potential in Parekh. He can't skate as well in terms of power and speed, but his style is more shifty like Hughes. His attack is a hybrid between Hughes/Makar and sky is the limit.

Hughes got walked regularly in his second year as a pro and Makar took 2 full years before he turned pro as he needed to gain strength and also work on his defensive game. I think Zayne can be strong enough in the fall to compete in the NHL and also should be allowed to make mistakes as he goes. Like I said, Hughes was extremely poor defensively when he first started and his shot was a muffin too. Not everyone needs to take the same path and I see little point in him playing another year in the CHL.

Of course you could be right about DeAngelo, but I would bet big money that he will be much much more than that.
I have grown an appreciation for Parekh over the past year, still think he’s a head case to some degree but on the ice he’s legit.

At the time, DeAngelo had so damn much hype behind him too - was seen as a top-10 pick if he didn’t have off ice issues that have plagued his career to date. He was Parekh before Parekh. But Zayne is a little bit more talented because of how manipulates defenders opening lanes to get the puck to the net.

I view Deangelo as Parekh’s floor. A 50 point defenseman you have to hide for him to maximize his talents. I also think Deangelo only ever hit his floor, just had this innate cockiness that made him never really work on his flaws or even improve his game much. Parekh may be a huge personality on the ice, but off ice he seems extremely dedicated to working on his game. There’s obviously graduating high school at 15, but he’s admitted in interviews he doesn’t want his defensive side to be a weakness and he’s been putting in work to correct it.
One article here that I really liked

Parekh still has plenty of flaws, but he’s made some good strides on improving defensively this year. His ceiling is definitely looking like a year over year P/g+ guy, and while his floor is probably Deangelo I haven’t seen any thing suggesting he’s trending to disappoint.

Edit: Another good one released today. Could be all talk, but this does not sound like a guy I worry about stagnating like Deangelo.

Calgary is going to have a real conundrum next year regarding where to play Parekh. He's simply too good for the OHL, just makes messes of opposing teams' defenses, and his own defensive stick is getting really good. Honestly, the only thing he needs to work on is strength, which could stop him from finding success in the NHL next season. But the idea of sending Parekh back to the OHL feels comical.

I'll predict he plays ~60 NHL games next season. If Lane Hutson can find success with that frame, then there's no reason Parekh can't.

Parekh with 15 games left in the regular season and needs 23 points to hit that 100 pt mark for a D. 3 more points last night. Some crazy talent with Misa and Chernyshov having a massive game as well in an 8-3 win over the Wolves

How bad are the goalies in the OHL lol ? I’ve seen lot of his goals highlights and no way he scores them in the NCAA let alone pro game .

The best Junior Goalies they have available in the draft. Some are 11 +12 years old. It’s the same league it has always been goalies are good bad and ugly but all NCAA goalies are unstoppable l get it

Chris Lazary does not get enough credit for developing these players over the years. Just about every coach would not have let Zayne go out there and play his style. He's not afraid for his players to take their lumps from time to time as long as they are out there trying to make plays happen. It a development league. Go out there and develop those skills. He's going to have his 4th top ten pick during tenure in Saginaw.

Sounds like someone who might then be considering NCAA.

EDIT : never mind, he signed his ELC. I am stupid. Carry on.

He cant cuz he already signed hes elc. Its gonna be interesting to see what him and dickinson do, both in similar boat, signed elc, cant play in ahl.
It's an imperfect situation for both teams. If I were the GM for either team, I'd park either of them on my third pairing for a year, maybe occasionally healthy scratch them for motivational/teaching purposes, and live with the results. Neither team is contending for a Cup, so may as well give these guys an actual challenge and see if they meet it.

Realistically, both guys will be wasting time next year in a league they are too good for.

Another year of junior is not going to hurt these guys. Look at Matthew Poitras. Kept up by the Bruins in his 19 year old season. This year his going back and forth between the AHL and NHL. He'd be in the exact same spot if he had played his 19 year old season in the OHL. If the options are CHL or NHL, always always always send them back unless they can actually contribute at the NHL level. Now in the future you will probably see these types of guys in the AHL at 19 but for now, better to side with sending them to junior.

I don't really see the comparison here. First of all, you're comparing the 54th pick to guys who were taken with the 9th and 11th pick. There are different expectations for what these players are going to become. Second, you haven't made a case for his D+2 year having hurt his development. He played 35 games and had season ending shoulder surgery.

Both Parekh and Dickinson could very easily be both in the AHL in 2026-27 to start regardless of what they do next season, but given that both guys have to work on their defensive games in order to stick in the NHL, I would rather have them see first hand what level of strength and speed they have to deal with now so that they have a good idea of how much they have to work on. I don't think another year in the OHL would damage either, but they also won't have a lot of motivation to improve defensively.

I guess my main point was if they stick, fine. But the reasoning behind it has to be that they can hold their own and contribute to their NHL squads. Not that the CHL is a waste of time.

It won’t happen but Calgary should consider sending him to Sweden or Switzerland next year. He’s not ready for the NHL, too good for the OHL and not allowed to play in the AHL. In the SHL/NL he would get big minutes and can elevate his defensive game. He won’t learn anything from stat padding in Saginaw for another year.

Unfortunately i think he’s just a s contractually not allowed to play in NL/SHL just as much as he wouldn’t be allowed in the AHL. Every contract is breakable of course but I doubt anyone is going to deal with the nonsense that it will entail.

He’ll make the Flames out of camp, play 9 games or whatever rotating in and out until the juniors, then play those and go back to the OHL I bet.

The AHL stuff is different. You’re right that CHL players don’t test it, but there’s nothing actually stopping him from leaving to another league.
